Anyone familiar with any experimental music bands? such as Explosions in the Sky, Mono, Mum, Godspeed you black emperor, etc? I'm trying to find as many as I can. I cant get enough of them! Its so nice to hear something so different for a change, something that can really get you relaxed and just enjoy yourself.

Seriously though, I lovez0rz experimental music. Stuff like, indeed, Mono, GYBE!, Explosions In The Sky, Air and all that, but also more avant-garde things like Merzbow, Ground Zero, Xinlisupreme, Nikudorei, Kiyoshi Mizutani, etcetera. Experimental music r0xz0rz.

By the way, have you heard My Bloody Valentine? They're awesome. 'Sometimes' by them is on the Lost In Translation soundtrack, and it's easily their best track ever, but their other stuff is awesome as well.

Haven't heard of those... well now I have, well... I decided to look up MONO since it was mentioned and downloaded a few tracks off their official website... sounds cool :)

There are so many My Bloody Valentine addict in Japan.
They are kind legendary band.

GYBE! is from Canada, by the way. The guys from the collective are also in some other bands, like Silver Mt. Zion - be sure to check them out, too. I love GYBE!, amazing stuffs.

Ever Heard of Hooverphonic or Sigur Ros? Theyre supposed to be similar but I havent gotten to checking em out yet.

Hooverphonic is very different, they're a triphop band from Belgium, female vocals and all. I have their debut album, 'A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular', and it's pretty good. However, it's nothing like the post-rock bands we were talking about, it's more like Portishead, Mazzy Star, and Goldfrapp.

As for Sigur Rós, I know I should check them out, because I'll probably like them (I liked what I heard so far), but the whole hype surrounding Sigur Rós is extremely off-putting.

And definitely great stuff for dem movies, post-rock. :yes

Sigur ros is pretty good. I have the CD with no name. the one with () on it. Very soothing. I like the few things I've heard from mono as well.

I seriously think Envy deserves a place in this thread, since their sound is downright evolutionary. They used to be a hardcore band that blended NYHC and old-school stuff, but they've evolved into something far beyond it, leaning more and more towards (again) post-rock with every release. The best name for it would be screamo, as it combines furious instrumentation and vocals with the most beautiful melodies and build-ups you've ever heard. In that last aspect they're undeniably post-rock, they're just (quite) a bit louder and more chaotic, and use vocals, which most post-rock bands don't. Recommended!

Hooverphonic was already mentioned, so, anyone into triphop? I'm not really a big fan of it anymore, but back in the days I couldn't stop listening to Portishead's music. Anyone familiar with them? Truly beautiful music, could be called experimental I think.

Out of curiosity, has any of you guys heard of Japanese Telecom. It's techno/electro I guess, but strangely bizarre. Now, I'm not a fan of dance music by any means, except for Yellow Magic Orchestra maybe and what few dance tracks Ayu has done, but this band is downright awesome. Their music is leaning towards ambient, going on at a steady but, what do you call it, almost slow-motion kind of pace. What the heck, let's just call it electro. Worth a listen.

Oh, and for anyone who likes some noisy industrial stuff and such, check out the movie 'Tetsuo'. The sound design and soundtrack for it are so incredible, I ripped the sound from the movie and burned it onto a disc. You can easily just listen to that movie, incredible, kudos to the sound designer.

In spite of all though, post-rock is easily my favorite genre. I just love every band that comes out and does a post-rock thing (beats me why, it's true though). The overall quality of the music is just tremendously high, amazing stuff. It's what music has evolved into eventually - it'll be hard for anything in the future to surpass the sheer beauty, intelligence, and quality of post-rock.

This is sooo frightening occult noise.
karlmayer was Japanse noise band,which respect Keiji Haino,about 12 years ago.
Their cassette tapes didn't sell at all and don't release anymore.
Nowadays he read poem and plays the guitar in live.

And I have listened only one song from Envy though I had interest in such a old school hardcore stuff before then.Awesome!!

Yeah,Yellow Magic Orchestra is undoubtedly most significant techno band in Japan.
It is said the second is Denki Groove though they are foolish Techno pop.
In 2002 other two members of YMO except for Ryuichi Sakamoto debuted as Sketch Show.Their genre is perhaps 'minimal' and took part in Sonar 2003 Barcelona.

Nope, I meant 'Tetsuo', from 1988, directed by Shinya Tsukamoto, starring Tomorowo Taguchi. If you haven't seen it, check it out, it's a masterpiece.

Here's a noise track by me, by the way. I make noise myself, too. Aware though, it's pure harsh noise, not that experimental sculptured art stuff like Merzbow, it's more like Masonna and such, pure distortion and noise.
