Glitch music and art

So, glitch! While glitch is supposed to be rather annoying, as it is "a short-lived fault in a system", there is so called glitch music and glitch art, which is why I created this thread. Some of you may already be familiar with glitch music (Noriko Tujiko, AOKI Takamasa and more Japanese artists, but also some artists like Fennesz, Alva Noto, Muslimgauze (not everything) and some of Aphex Twin's works), so feel free to discuss that here. I also wanted to draw attention to glitch art, which I find just incredibly intriguing. There's various forms; I personally prefer the one where images get distorted (rather than random glitch generators etc.). Some examples:

Recommended listening:

Noriko Tujiko - Shojo Toshi
AOKI Takamasa - Silicom 2
Fennesz - Venice
Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto - Vrioon
Oval - Wohntohn

glitch art tends to make me think of the 80's when the Nintendo was first introduced and those games were always glitching and making what would now be considered glitch art. that said, i do like some of it. i was actually browsing for more on google and thought that i'd love to have prints of some that i found.

as for glitch music, i like what i've heard so far, but i've only heard a few songs. i know i heard one or two a while back by noriko tujiko and loved them.

Glitches are awesome. :) They're very mysterious.... ;o
And uhh... HOLY CRAP is that poke`mon or something?

sxesven 22nd April 2006 09:35 AM

Yep, it is! There's actually a random glitch generator for the Pokémon games that makes everything look like that - completely bizarre yet strangely fascinating.

Who moved this thread to General Music Chat? It's not just about glitch music. Thank you. :no

This thread reminds me of one of the most classic and famous glitches: The Final Fantasy VI Relm Sketch Glitch. I have the original super nintendo cartridge and whenever you would try to sketch with Relm on an invisible enemy or to sketch Gau once you found him on Veldt, one of your carachters would spin muddled, one would turn into an Imp status, another would become Terra as an Esper, some of the colors would get weird and random numbers would appear while the game would freeze. It happened quite a few times for me but fortunately, I would only lose the game up to the point of my last save, because some people report that the glitch can even sometimes erase the entire data of your game, or fully level up and increase the number of weapons to infinity but those never happened to me. Weird enough, after 4 years owning the game (a long time ago though as I haven't played SNES in ages) the glitch completely disappeared without any reason. I do know the later copies of the game were produced without the glitch buut my copy was one of the very first produced (if not the first one ahah j/k) because I bought that game the very moment it was released.

Wow, that sounds so brilliant. I googled for images but didn't find any, too bad. Sounds so good though.

Reminds me of another one as well: Missingno. in Pokémon Red and Blue. Which was also brilliant. One more Glitch City image, by the way:

Anymore (in)famous videogame glitches?

Wow, those SMB glitches are great. Thanks for posting them, hadn't seen 'em!

explodingbird 16th October 2006 10:55 PM

Hmm, this should be moved abck to Gaming...

Has anyone here played the original Harvest Moon for the Super Nintendo?

After the earthquake occurs in Winter, go into the Fortune Teller's house. I think it only applies to being in there. It's... just whoa.

Funky.

I may take a screenshot sometime later when i have time and can get to the glitched section.

sxesven 16th October 2006 10:56 PM

It should stay here, as glitch is anything but limited to gaming - though it is a purely digital phenomenon. Nevertheless, since this discussion involves anything from game glitches to glitch music, it's fine where it is.

That you mention it sure brings back memories... far before I had a computer, or was into gaming at all, I had a Sega Mega Drive (aka. Genesis in the US) that I played on pretty much, but that was it, my parents would never let me play much. I often went home to a friend who had a Super Nintendo... and he had Harvest Moon. Around that time was the first time I tried pulling an all-nighter, but I failed miserably at around 4AM ... well, I blame it on being young, 10 I think. Nostalgia. The music that plays while in town... I could just walk around, humming it to myself.

However much I played this game together with my friend I never think I noticed this glitch, I'd love to see it, if only because it'd be a small nostalgy trip.

thanks sxesven, glad to see you back in this thread!

something i recently read about that i think is really interesting...
Quote:

For several years now, an Australian scientist named Cameron Jones (and a lot of other people) are applying fungus and molds to the playing surface of CD, specifically to play with the mold's audio properties. And you'd be surprised what it sounds like. Rather than muffling the audio, it adds echo, audio holes and glitching, all effects that people pay good money to achieve electronically. Jones and his fellow molecular remixers also use microscopically thin layers of plastics to effect audio, not to mention movies, photography and artwork.

aww, I remember that missingno cheat in pokemon lolz. If you did that missingno cheat, you would get an unlimited amount of an item...I cant remember how to do it though...

sxesven 17th October 2006 09:35 PM

You had to depart from your hometown or something to that particular island (forgot the name) by flying, and then immediately start walking around by the edge of the water until Missingno. appeared. The item that was sixth in your list was maxed out (99 pieces).

Dustie 18th October 2006 12:27 PM

Ok, so I understand how does glitch art look like, but any examples of glitch music?...
