Are compilation CDs as big as in the US?

It seems like there is always a new best-of CD popping up. Like best of the 80's, 80's love songs, 80's dance hits, etc (I just thought of the 80's first...) Then there are the Now! CDs, Grammy nomminees CDs, and too many more to remember.
Are they as big a thing in Japan? Maybe I just don't notice them, because I don't look for them.

I started thinking of this because I was going to make cd for my bf for his b-day with love songs. I was originally going to ask what y'all thought were the most romantic contemporary J-pop songs, but I think that has been asked before (but then again what hasn't :P ) and I started to wonder what people in Japan would say and then I started thinking of best-of cds...

compilation albums are certainly popular in Japan, but I don't think they are as big as in the US.

for example, usually there aren't that many compilations within the yearly top 100 on oricon. but there are many in the yearly 100-200 range.

Well, in my opinion, these are some of the most romantic songs i can think of ... XD

Tohoshinki - Forever Love
Tohoshinki - Sennen Koi Uta
Utada Hikaru - First Love
Utada Hikaru - FINAL DISTANCE
Utada Hikaru - Stay Gold
Ayumi Hamasaki - JEWEL
Thelma Aoyama - Soba ni Iru ne feat. SoulJa
Ami Suzuki - If...
Angela Aki - This Love
BoA - Smile Again
BoA - LOVE LETTER
Koda Kumi - anything ending with "No Uta"

I think compilation albums in US can sell decently but the japanese obviously think otherwise

you can definitely tell that the japanese loves compilation albums especially whenever an artistes pulls out a greatest hits album of any sorts to celebrate his/her x anniversary in the business & etc

but for some weird reasons , they don't seem to like ballads compilations , I don't know why

I know Bob Marley's compilation album sold really well, but in general, compilation albums aren't as popular unless its a super-famous and somewhat retired artist.

American compilations can sell upwards of 800k+..

Whereas with J-pop ones, you have to get lucky. Like Beautiful songs sold a lot, but a lot of compilations afterwards didn't sell too well..

LOL

I don't think it's especially when you consider the background history behind it

it's more like a tribute funeral song or something like that

Zachery! 27th April 2008 09:51 PM

I mean the general feel of the song.

It's sad, but if someone started singing the chorus to me, i'd be like "aww"

know what i mean?

The compilation albums in the U.S. like NOW music collection and such aren't as popular, but decent selling artists like rock, conservative, and pop sell extremely well as solo best albums. such as Destiny's Child, Mariah Carey, ABBA, Queen, Rolling Stones, and many other, but it's only to a certain extent.

For Japanese compilation albums I think it's different, because they tend to sell more along the lines of solo artists rather than just single songs from many artists by themselves. All in all I tend to think Japanese compilations are much more bigger sales wise, promotional wise, and overall by QUALITY!!!

There definitely are Japanese compilation albums, and I know people own them! They aren't as popular as in the states or as frequent, but they exist. Here's one called "Ai no Uta" for romantic songs... http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%A2%E3...3079237&sr=8-1
