Do you think Ayumi has a strong voice?

So lately my mother has shown a great interest in J-POP music lately, her favorties being Koda Kumi and Namie Amuro. She didn't like Ayu very much, mostly because I told her she doesn't have an R&B sound. But I was determined to turn her into a fan xD;... So, yesterday I brought all of my concert DVDs, featuring Koda Kumi, Namie Amuro and then Ayumi Hamasaki. She LOVES Koda Kumi, she thinks she has style and her songs make you want to dance. She thinks Namie Amuro is a great dancer and also thinks she outshines some American artists by dancing AND singing at the same time.

Then came Ayu, I first put on one of my favorite perfomances, CDL 2005-2006 Bold & Delicious with the Gospel Choir (my mom's a religious nut xD; ). My mom was stunned at how strong her voice was and wanted to watch more and more and more. I even put on some of Ayu's PVs, JEWEL, Startin', and momentum (cause I loved her coat xD; ). She fell in love with Ayu's voice. I was really surprised that Ayu turned out to be her favorite so quickly. So my question is, do you think Ayumi's voice is strong? Did it capture your attention at your first listen?

very very strong voice

To be honest, it comes and goes. Sometimes she has an amazingly powerful voice (usually during rock song performances like is this LOVE? or really soulful songs like Pride), but other times she can't hold a note for very long. During 2005/2006 it was consistently strong, though.

Definitely agree with this.

I'm sorry, but any superlative list that puts Ashley Tisdale at #1 is invalidated :laugh

Definately. I in example can't stand listening to many other (female) artists because I automatically compare their voices to Ayu's and they tend to sound SOO weak. XD;; That's one of the reasons why I lovelovelove Ayu, because she has such a strong voice but can still pull off even a tender ballad. That's why I like Koda Kumi a lot too, even though I'm not a hiphop/RnB fan.

i think her voice is amazing and strong. in her first album i don't think it's as good, i think she has improved so much over the years.

I agree!

i strongly agree that ayu has a strong voice. when i frist heard her song DEAREST (first time i became a fan), i was astonished at how sweet her voice was,but powerful at the same time. from that day on, ive always loved her voice and of course her natural beauty. she is amazing on stage and she obviously puts so much emotion to her songs. it may be acting but shes so good! for example, her documentary shows how hard she works to entertain her fans.

milky_way 5th August 2008 09:13 PM

No, I don't think she has a strong voice, but it's not weak either.

tehxiinae 5th August 2008 09:18 PM

i think she has a very strong voice. if ever there's a doubt about that, go listen to the A BALLADS version of A Song For XX. that recording is SO powerful it's like...

no words can describe it :)

kirei_ayumi 5th August 2008 09:48 PM

ayu's voice is pretty amazing and I enjoy it every time I hear it, whether she is singing or not...

ExodusUK 5th August 2008 09:56 PM

It's at it's best when she's doing the man voice. For example Bold & Delicious shows it off very well, and the whole Kiss o Kill performance AT07. Another good vocal performance is from CDL07-08 (gasp) of Bold & Delicious, she really gets into it.

couldn't have said that better myself :)

i agree with most. it comes and goes. during a concert, i believe it usually depends how late it is into it. toward the end, it gets a bit raspy and... off? :shrug i feel she is then yelling into the microphone until she gets into the encore and sings her ballads.

usually during her tv performances, she's on the ball perfectly.

Hahaha Madonna above Ayu in voice? I heard her live once it sounded like Ayu from 1999 but with a manly voice. What the heck are Kelly and Hilary doing at 9 and 10? I saw Kelly live and she can hardly sing. Hilary I have never heard live but I can hardly define her voice as "powerful". More like DollyDots meets Pussycat Dolls. (Though it is quite awesome than kelly is so high its just silly =p)

Ayu has a VERY powerful voice, so much emotion and power!

Lumix 6th August 2008 01:12 AM

Her voice totally rocks! Ayumi has the best female voice I've ever heard. :) Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly didn't have bad voices either. <3

AyUta 6th August 2008 01:22 AM

Ayu has a strong voice :yes
