Jpop vs. Jrock sales and popularity
 

I was just wondering: how do Jpop and Jrock compare in terms of sales and popularity? I've way long since grown out of my Jrock phase (I barely listen to any Jrock anymore), but I still never see them on any of the oricon charts. Maybe I'm just never looking on days when big Jrock artists release stuff, though. :/

So is Jrock even that popular in Japan? Usually pop in general tends to have a bigger following in most countries, but I just never really hear anything about Jrock. I suppose it probably doesn't help that this is mostly a Jpop-oriented forum, so there are probably more Jpop listeners on here than Jrock. :shrug

I could be wrong but in terms of sales , JRock doesn't sell that much as JPop .

I'm speaking in terms of the lesser well known JRock bands such as abingdon boys school & BREAKERZ that I support

I think established jrock bands like L'arc en ciel & GLAY still are able to sell well at this point in time

Isen't Bz considered rock? If so they are the most selling band in Japan of all times.

The bands that are more linked to a certain fashion or niche of course do not sell that much because their appeal is very limited.

both artistes are ranked the best & 2nd best selling Japanese act of all time & even up to now , both still can rank up really high physical CD sales

what isn't selling (almost at all) are VK jrock bands. Laruku, B'z, Mr.Children and many others sell really good.

If the "visual" bands chart, they seem to fall right away. Dir en grey, for example, can reach the top 5 for the weekly album charts, but are gone soon after.

yeah, but I thought that Dir en grey aren't VK anymore.

That's why I added the quotations ;) Still, bands like them don't have the fanbase of bands like B'z and pop music have or X Japan had.

I think it's much of a Jpop vs Jrock.

i think J-rock has certainly lost its appeal, especially in this point in time in J-music. i think it's just not their "time" now, especially with the rise in boybands/groups (not only JE, but EXILE, DBSK, etc.). they were bigger in the 90s / early 00s.

but i think people mix up J-rock with that of Visual Kei. i don't think they are the same, but VK is a specific section of J-rock.

Mr.Children's been doing great, even after all these years. they're very consistent! but yeah, L'Arc~en~Ciel, B'z, GLAY, etc. have passed their peak, so it seems~
