"bump"?

ok, so this is one of those naiive and seemingly obvious things (like the requsting sets question... lets not re-hash that...) but what does it mean when something is "bumped"?

pommy48 18th August 2009 07:27 AM

wow can't believe there's a wikipedia article on bumping, but anyways

To bump a thread on an Internet forum is to post a reply to it purely in order to raise the thread's profile. This will typically return it to the top of the list of active threads.

So the thread is bumped up like if it was on page 8, it'll get bumped to page 1

You can also bump polls just by voting in them, even if you don't post.

So when you see old ass polls from like '04 being bumped up, and no one posting, it's because someone dug up that thread and voted.

For what reason, I have no idea. People bumping threads is a little ridiculous on a forum like this, where there are large numbers of threads....unless the other was fairly recent.

haha don't worry I didn't know what it meant either, until I saw more people talking about it!

AyuRox 18th August 2009 07:52 AM

lol. thx everyone. and there's a Wiki page on it? O_o ...wow...

ownsarai 18th August 2009 08:34 AM

I think there's a wiki page on just about everything! xD

waterballoon 18th August 2009 09:14 AM

apparently it means

"bring up my post"

but I'm not too sure either.

zyoeru 18th August 2009 09:45 AM

^ Isn't that just a backronym?

waterballoon 18th August 2009 10:04 AM

I'm not too sure; I just vaguely remember seeing it from another forum lol

zyoeru 18th August 2009 10:12 AM

It's probably true, but I always just thought bump as in..just well..bumping it up. XD
