[2008] Ayu reactions at Staples Business Depot.

So I work at Staples Business Depot, I was at cash and we are advertising this big screen TV to be sold with 102 Dalmations playing to show it off. I then decided after seeing the movie 7 times that I should bring something in to play on the TV. so I brought in some ayumi goodies to play while people are being cashed out here are some reactions...

A BEST 2 dvds
During "evolution" some older woman was staring at the video with an evil look on her face of disapproval and during "JEWEL" some girl was watching and saying to her friend "this isn't english!". Another woman came by during "INSPIRE" with a confuzed look on her face and asked who she was.

ASIA TOUR 2007 ~Tour of Secret~
a group of teenagers we're cashing out and one guy was like "oh its miley cirus!" and continued to watch. I was amused and wondered how on earth he thought it was her. It was during "kiss o' kill"

COUNTDOWN LIVE 2007-2008
My manager walks by during "Ladies Night" and goes "Oh whats this? I don't reconize her"

ARENA TOUR 2006 ~(miss)understood~
During the hoping ayu interlude this girl was glued to the TV watching with amusement.

COUNTDOWN LIVE 2005-2006

A employee of mine was watching and claimed she knew ayu from somewhere. I told her that ayumi doesn't usually have dark brown hair.

if I get anymore reactions I'll post em. lol

I had a wallpaper up on my computer of the photos from the A BEST 2 -WHITE- booklet and someone mistook Ayu for Tila Tequila. I didn't know who Tila was but I found out a week later and I came back into class and said to the person, "ARE YOU BLIND???" xD;;;;;;;;

Funny social experiment, I wish I could try that!

I think if you were able to sub the videos, or have a translation on standby near the TV, reactions would be totally different. I told my friends what the songs meant, and their attitude changed slightly (then again, my friends are adolescents). But if the actual meaning was there, I think many would change their opinions on her.

I don't think it'd change much. You need to be able to appreciate music for what it is before that...Americans have a bad habit of being ethnocentric especially went it comes to things like culture. Anything out of the norm is seen as awkward when judged against the "norm" in the U.S. Kudos to you for advertising Ayu in America.

I applaud you for using the word ethnocentric, since I didn't think there was anyone else who knew that word. XD

Anyways, this is awesome!! Please keep posting more! I would have loved to try something like this when I was in retail.

Oh yes, I use that word quite a lot when I describe reaction to music from a foreign country here in the U.S. It just about sums up everything. Ayu's music isn't the kind of thing I think most people would appreciate here anyway...not to offend anyone or her for the matter. She's got her own unique style that just wouldn't fly here. It's all right...she still has a multitude of fans in the states that would absolutely mob her if word got out she was coming here for something...

Oops lol. Regardless of if it's Canada or the U.S. the reaction would have been the same...maybe worse here. I guess what I'm trying to say is people are too narrow-minded and conceited here.

By the way, that is really so funny when people mistakenly think of Ayu as Miley...I mean, what were they thinking!?

I think YOU are the ignorant one for obviously missing the fact he is advertising her in CANADA, and instead automatically assuming he's advertising her THERE even though his location says Toronto

And as for narrow minded or conceited.. GET OVER YOURSELF. Canadians are neither. It's not always about culture you know, some people hear some Asian singers' voices and get repulsed because they sound like chipmunks.. Ayu takes time to grow on people in the West because they're not used to hearing her kind of voice and others just don't like her kind of pop music and would react the same if you put Britney Spears on.

Your whole post was a total overreaction and was pretty rude... And I might have missed something, but I swear no one said Canadians were narrow minded or conceited.

Actually he (jimex) is pretty right.

It sounds more like you're narrow minded for defending your Canada just because you live there, instead of looking at it from an objective perspective.

Woah woah man (and people). Please calm yourself. I'm not here looking for a quarrel and if you thought that was my intention I apologize. I just wanted to express my thoughts on this matter...not be attacked for it. Attack my posts, not me. I don't appreciate being called ignorant for one thing. I treat you like a human person so please do the same.

What I meant was that generally speaking, from my experiences, that's the way most people seem to react to something totally foreign. I would say it is only natural...otherwise how can you even make cultural distinctions between different races and ethnicities? Of course there will be exceptions. Maybe I should have stated that and not assumed people would know what I was trying to say.

Quote:
You're generalizing a whole country. Not every American is ignorant when it comes to a different culture. If you were to bring a whole nother culture into any place I'm sure there would be people who would badly judge it and not to mention that person is in CANADA. You're definitely the ignorant one.
Huh? Where in my posts did I say Americans, (or Canadians for the matter) are ignorant? I never once called them that. The word I used was "ethnocentric" and it represents a kind of view, not a kind of trait. This doesn't necessarily mean someone is ignorant. Don't put words into my posts. The two terms are black and white for crying out loud.

I can't believe I'm being attacked this much for one silly post/mistake. It definitely was not something I intended. Please just drop it. I didn't come here to attack people or be attacked.

Unfortunately this is true. I'd be very surprised if you ever saw a positive reaction from someone that isn't asian themselves or already very open to asian culture in most parts of North America, but especially America.
