Ayumi Hamasaki Song for Recital
I REALLLY wanna do an Ayumi Hamasaki song for a project in voice lessons
But my problem - which song should I do? Or which song do you think I should do or what would you do?I did Will and a lot of people liked it (in fact, got me an award) but I don't know if I want to do it again. PS - I want to do Love song but I can't find any piano scores anywhere :/ If you know where I can get it, please let me know. |

Hm... depends. What's your range? That's really the first thing I would go on.

Boooo.
I won't give my opinion on what you should sing because I don't know your range, and I've never heard you sing.

Why so rude? All she did was ask for your singing range. A perfectly fine question you should of expected. Don't expect people to give you their time and advice when you answer them like that.

I'm a singer as well
![]() I'd try Free & Easy!!! It has an obvious piano backing and since your range is pretty high, you can really belt during the chorus.(especially the final chorus around 4min where it goes up maybe an octavo "zutto") It has a really nice unexpected ballad intro.. I think when you jump from that to the powerful chorus, it'll have a great effect. Just my 2 cents..

I don't think any Japanese music would suit a professional level recital at all...
The Japanese pronunciation and accent makes it so you wind up singing entirely out of the nose and your whole tone changes in a way most Westerners find annoying or strange. If you choose to not use that Japanese style, it sounds like you're just an American awkwardly singing in Japanese with no knowledge of the language... sort of loses authenticity and the "culture" of the song. Sort of a lose/lose situation. I've always wanted to sing Ayu songs for performances but I know it's not realistic, since on a professional level not only is pop music typically frowned upon but Japanese is not a language formally taught/used by voice students and their instructors.

I'm thinking of doing HEAVEN or Green, not sure yet. And like I said, I did Will, and it got me an award so it suits a recital just fine

I'd say sticking to English, Italian, French, or German would show off a Western-style voice better. While it's good you won an award and whatnot, you need to keep in mind that you must play to your strengths. English and European languages that are typically taught in voice study are taught for a reason. The vowel sounds are more open, the accent and pronunciation leads to better overall vocal technique, and the sound itself is more pleasing to American ears.
While I've always thought it was a shame that I can't realistically mix my two greatest loves, like I said, you need to play to your strengths. Common vocal repertoire became that way because it does just that, and while it's not terribly unique, it's really helpful as a teaching tool and performance study.

Turns out, I decided to do HEAVEN, and my vocal instructor said it sounds really good and that it'll be a good performance. Oh yeah, and just to let you know - I'm not American

Oglala Nation - We don't like to be called Americans, we consider people who aren't Indigenous "American" because that's what they like to be called, it's no different than calling Japanese people derogatory terms so please, don't start with the whole "but since you're in America, you're American" BS, please? I grew up speaking an entirely different language until I was 12. It's very offensive to me and my culture and that has nothing to do with this convo at all anyways, but I just wanted to clarify it because I prefer there to be no arguments. This is about Ayu and singing her songs which I am doing and I'm interested in hearing if you would do a song or have done a song.
