Personally, I think the overacting by Ayu in both the MW and Green videos is intentional. Watching both MVs, they have a theme in common. They are both about identity as performance.

In MW, Ayu is a spy, a person for whom identity is always reinvented and constructed, hence it is "performed". In Green, Ayu is a performer for the Chinese stage. For an actor, identity is also a performance. The homosexual undertones in Green is about how gender is a performance as well. I think the director is trying to connect the act of performing to the way one expresses one's sexuality. Midoring as a man, and the two men dancing together. Remember that back in the era that the music video is set, it was still common to have men perform the roles of women on stage.

So when Ayu overacts, she is drawing attention to her performance in the music video. The contrast between Ayu walking down the street in the beginning and in the end show this as well. At the start of the video, Ayu is very unnatural in her movements, she is situated in the middle of the view of the camera, and the colors are warm. In the ending, the camera zooms away from an Ayu walking away. Her expressions and movements are more natural, and the colors are cold and harsh. In the beginning, the performance is simply beginning. In the end, the performance comes to a close.

Good interpretation... But I still think that in the beginning, she's looking for where Midoring left and everything from theathre part 'til the PV ending where Midoring leaves by the car is a flashback?
Plus in the very beginning before the "GREEN" and chinese&japanese "ayumi hamasaki" text appears there's the sound of walking with high heels, same when Ayumi walks off in the ending. At that part it shows some grey buildings like in the ending before "getting out" from that area into the sepia coloured central village.. xD I wonder if I make any sense.

Of course you make sense Actually, watching the video all over again, this is definitely about issues of sexuality. When Ayu is dancing on stage with her dancers, her performances are controlled, polished, spectacular, and artificial. She is also at her most feminine during these performances. However, when she begins to daydream while in the dressing area, her tango with Midoring is stilted, awkward, flawed, and human. Her movements here are probably at their most honest.

So, yes, it is a video with a gay message! It all makes sense now

The idea for the PV was good. It just wasn't executed as well as it could have been. So good points...
  • This was my first time hearing the song green all the way through. I liked the song alot.
  • The Chinese feel of the PV.
  • Midoring was in a suit.
  • The part where Ayu and Midoring were dancing and there was the face touching.
  • Ayu looked good in the red dress. (Isn't it called a qípáo?)

There's more good points but yeah...
As far as if Midoring was a guy or not....Midoring was wearing heels.

It could be a worse PV... but you can't please everybody. Overall, I like the symbolism and such. But again, it could have been executed better.

That's the only part I found good in the whole dancing part.

Yeah me too.

Everyone blames the director, but well, what if ayu didn't feel like doing another take again? What if she just thought: "I don't mind the flaws, I'm tired and I don't want to redo that scene again"
I don't see why many people make such a huge deal over the flaws anyway, the flaws are not so horrible that they make the PV unwatchable. To me if I had to pick....if anything makes the PV unwatchable it would be the editing.

But it's watchable to me.

I like when Ayu has flaws such as 'overacting' and such. It shows she's human. People can't be perfect all the time...

If Midoring was not wearing heels, she would be much smaller than Ayumi..
And always the man has to be taller in those love situations.
Its the cliche of the world, including asia~
You cant really notice the heels either~~
And I think if she really was supposed to be a girl..
she would look more like a girl... o.o);;

Anyways~ its up to whoever watches the pv.
Unless if the making video tells us some of the story.

As someone said to me before..
That doesnt sound like her attitude.
She does something until its correct and right in her mind.
And its the editing team and directors job to force her to make other takes..
Because it looks bad on the director if it looks bad...
Even if she had bad acting, I think they could have done more to make it better.

It was a beautiful looking pv..
But poor pv..

Even those 2 channels are saying..
"That is the weirdest pv I have ever watched."
etc.

I laughed so much~~ ahaha.

i know this was posted wayyyy back but still, i totally agree with everything. for me also, the overacting is intentional and i do not find it bad. the PV fits the lyrics and it has a message. to me it was executed fine ^______^
