This is something we will never know for sure, and I doubt it since there was never any public announcement about this being the case. If it would be the case, it'd be great promotion to announce that Ayumi has that control.

It is rumored that she does have a lot of influence on her releases, but we've only heard bits and pieces of it from here and there. For example that she's the one to choose compositions & arrangements for her songs, although it happens that she does so together with Max or other professionals.

I'm actually 100% sure that she does not have complete control on what to release and when. It more likely states in her contract that she has to do a tour and write/record/release this and that many singles/albums/songs a year.

career control is a complex issue in the j-pop industry. record company isn't everything , to be a succesful in japan you'll also need a management company. Namie is managed by Vision Factory & Ayu is by Avex.

I'm not 100% what falls under the managent company & what under the label, but I guess it's like the recording/music producing by the label (obviously lol) & everything else (tours , lives , TV & magazine appearances , commercial endorsements etc) are arranged by the management company.

While I do think Ayu has control over her career , but at the same she has to answer to her management & record company to some extent.

Ah, now that you present the existence of a management company a lot of things turn a bit more clear, considering how everything seems to work.

Ayumi also always says "we did our best" whenever there's a new release, tour or whatever coming. She's definitely involved, but she does most likely not have much of the actual control. I wonder who got the last word in what.

Well, for starters, in any company, the shareholders have a big say and then comes the CEO. I HIGHLY doubt Ayu has much say in the timing of her releases because she's an artist, not a businesswoman. You have to realize she makes music for profit first, integrity second.

I think if Ayu didn't release it now, she wouldn't be able to. There are way too many songs; she couldn't even include newer songs.
