The true poet has a handful of metaphors which define his or her life, which truly expresses how he or she sees the world as an artist. Anyway, it's not whether or not the words he or she uses are the same, it's how he or she uses them, in what context. In my opinion, the lyrics of Ayumi Hamasaki are one continuous refinement of her thoughts on her life experience, for example comparing the adolescent voice in Boys & Girls and the more mature one in Glitter.

For me, Ayu is not a lyricist. She's a real poet.

The best part:

If only I had deserved your love
As many as the times you said you loved me
If only I had loved you
As many as the times I said I loved you

I gave up, thinking that I couldn't reach your voice
I gave up, thinking that this dream wouldn't come true
You see? Though the person before my eyes was
The real you

Interesting point of view: Ayu is speaking as someone who doesn't buy into the idea of "fate", which is the easier route for lesser lyricists. Actually, she is questioning the very idea of love, how for so long people have distorted the meaning of "fate", that she has come to doubt it, and when it presents itself to her she refuses to accept it, when it was simply purehearted love presenting itself to her, perhaps what "fate" was originally meant to be. Ah, it will take me pages to express my thoughts on the song

Pages of actual interpretation is a lot better than pages of simply "Thanks for the translation!"~

I will Well, when I have some free time...

One of my dream projects is to start a blog analyzing and comparing all of Ayu's lyrics, to show her evolution as a lyricist. Ah, maybe someday it will happen

I like the lyrics, though the "You see?" in basically every song is a bit annoying, but hey, if Ayumi wants the lyrics to say that, there's nothing I can do about it.
My thoughts exactly! Stop saying "you see?", it's getting old! >_<

ah, but beautiful song none the less.

That "you see" thingy is just one "nee" in japanese and it is not so uncommon to use it over and over again... at elast in Japanese.
I don't have much time reading translation, I do read them but not that much to memorize everything.
To me, reading the translation, getting the main idea, then listen to the song, I can fully feel Ayu's emotion. Ayu has become so matured lately, the songs are way better, more emotional than her previous work.
That's why I like her so much.

Well, I'm going to be a jerk and invade masa's thread by doing a shameless self-plug and throwing in the SELs for fated that I put together...

And we can feel it the very first time
We go weak in the knees

I can feel the breeze upon my face, the wind is whispering in my ears
I feel so alive, and now I know that I'm not seeing an illusion, all this is real

I had thought that I would never hear your voice again
And I thought the dreams I had of you would never come true
But I'm sure of one thing, what I'm seeing right now
In front of me...can't be anyone but you

I'm not sure about where going down this road will lead
And I still don't know how I'll manage to make it there
It's useless for me to try and predict
What lies there at the end

But sometimes I feel that if I try to be stronger for you, I just can't
Th' stronger I want to become, the weaker my heart grows with every effort
What can I do?

Through my endless tears I cried your name again and again
Though I knew I was dreaming I didn't want it to end
But I'm sure of one thing, what I had seen before
In front of me...wasn't anyone but you

I can feel the breeze upon my face, the wind is whispering in my ears
I feel so alive, and now I know that I'm not seeing an illusion, all this is real

What I wish is that I somehow had deserved all your love
You had loved me so much more than I could have ever earned
And I wish that my love for you was as strong as I said
I was never being honest

And I gave up, thinking I could never hear your voice again
And I gave up thinking all those dreams would never come true
But I'm sure of one thing, what I saw that one time
In front of me...the real you was there

Sometimes I wonder. . . Who does Ayu write this songs for? I mean. She always says, "You" or " I couldn't reach you". There are one or two songs I can directly relate to but. . Most of them seem to be very very personal. As though she is writing them for someone dear to her.

I totally I agree with you. Most of the time her lyrics hide something inside, just like a poem would. Ayu's a poetic master!

I've thought the same thing, a lot of ayu's songs have this theme and are very personal. That's why I love her music, the lyrics are always so powerful. fated is such a beautiful song.

I didn't really like this song in the beginning.. cuz I didn't really like music. My brothers preferred fated over glitter tho, and one of them said the lyric was really good.. So I really wanna see the translation of it..

And yes... this is one of ayu's masterpiece .. Thanks so much for the translation..
