EXCUSE ME???? I AM an Ayu fan! I own all of her original albums. I look forward to all of her releases. But that does NOT mean that I think she should be higher on a list than other, older, legendary singers in Japan. My God!! I know you think Ayu is the best, but that doesn't mean you have to disregard all the singers that have been around for decades. And I am NOT a Britney Spears fan. Can't YOU read? I stated that in my other post. I don't like her and have never been a fan of hers. But that doesn't mean I don't think she's popular. I was stating FACTS! What's wrong with that? I'm not coming here to start trouble, I've been at this forum for a long time (although I don't post much). I'm just trying to open your eyes to reality. Ayu is not the most popular singer in the world, nor is she more deserving to be on that stupid list than anyone else. So get over it!

hmmm.. not bad.. i kinda dissapointed to see ayu in top 40 not in top 20 just like Hikki. If you count the total sales of their album (Hikki-ayu) ayu is still higher..
Oh well...Congrat to Ayu!

Why are you all fighting about this? Tetsuo... you usually say here and in other jpop forums that people shouldn't fight, but one thing to consider is that saying someone's opinion is wrong is just the same as starting an argument. While not everyone may like Britney here, it doesn't mean that she can't be talked about here. So Ayu's not #1 on the HMV list... does that make her useless or some "dried-up" singer? No. Ayu's not the most popular singer out there, so we all should at least try to accept that.

cause i know she is.. shes international..... but what was wrong of her/he coming here calling us names(ayumi rabid fans )

dont you agreed... ull find hardcore fan in any ayumi forum ..that would think shes best... but what can you do about it... its how they think.. and no one cant change that .. unless their selfs....

anywayz... lets just move on

Be realistic. 42 is a VERY reasonable place in an all-time list, although I do think Hikki ranking #24 is a but overexxagerated. Although Hikki sells more apparently [see Guiness book], that should be no excuse in the first place to rank her this high because I thought this list was not about sales. Second, I think both Hikki and Ayu have a lot of fans so the dedicated fanbase is probably somewhat equal. On the original factor; I seriously think Ayu is more original, because her music has a diversion that I haven't seen being equalled anywhere. Hikki's music is, although good, more of the same.

Other than that, come on: Ayu is NOT the only artist to come out of Japan. Japan has/had so many great and influential artists, you wouldn't believe. Many of these are already listed; like Cornelius and the stunning Pizzicato Five, to name two. I noted that someone said that Ryuichi Sakamoto wasn't listed yet. Maybe he'll be number one. He is probably one of the, if not THE most influential Japanese artists ever. So there.

I think Linzy had a very good point. Don't be narrowminded and go call her a not-fan or faker or whatever, she is actually being realistic here which I appreciate.

Nevertheless, I do think Hikki is a bit over-rated. Pwn.

And like Jose said, because she's ranked #42 doesn't mean she's a bad artist, not at all! #42 out of ALL JAPANESE ARTISTS EVER!!! So there! And last but not least, this list does not influence our fandom. We love her music, whether she's ranked #42, #1, or not even ranked at all.

It'd be curious to see how some of you would've reacted if Ayu wasn't mentioned at all. Like sxesven said, to be ranked is at least something worth being happy for, as she beat out other artists like Namie. Even still, it doesn't make her more or less of an artist because of these results. To me, I think this is all based on some rigid criteria, like album/single sales, advertising, involvement in the community, overall contribution to jpop, etc. So congrats to Ayu, as she's proven that time has yet to slow her down

That's why forums always have disadvantages, since people are free to express their opinions, you say what you want, he says his and I say mine, eventually everyone starts fighting with each other... -_-

And this forum has nothing but dedicated Ayu fans... imagine how it would go on forums with ppl who don't share this interest... I hate it when ppl bash her for nothing. I mean, they can express whatever opinion they want, but they should support their views with arguments and that's what's often missing. So we should be happy we at least do all support Ayu... otherwise this would have been total war prolly...

Thank you SO MUCH, sxesven! I wish other people could understand that I am not out to bash Ayu and cause trouble. I just think there's a lot of people here that are so unreasonable. I love Ayu, but she does not have the ledendary status that the people ranked higher on the list do.

Hikki may be overrated, but I can see why she is ranked so high. Her debut album, released when she was only 16, is the best selling Japanese album of all time. That is a huge accomplishment. I am also a Hikki fan, and I think she's extremely creative and intelligent.

I'm really surprised that Namie was ranked so low, though! She was soooo popular in the mid-90's. She was such a trendsetter and had a huge following.

Tetsuo, I'm sure Hikki has had a #1 hit sometimes, but in this particular list she is placed at #24 ^_^

I doubt it's based on votes. I'm almost postive HMV made the lists themselves based on sales and other important factors. If it was based on votes, it's very unlikely that older generations would even take their time to vote. Only younger people really care about these types of lists enough to vote.

I said "based on sales and other factors". That means it includes things like the impact they've had on the music scene, how long they've been able to last, etc etc.
Besides, even if it was based solely on sales (which it's not), Hikki still wouldn't be number 1. Just because she has the best selling album of all time, she has only released 3 full length albums. Some artists have released 15+, meaning in total they have sold way more than Hikki.

Totally with Linzy.

These lists are NOT just based on sales. Sales do NOT equal musical influence, or an artist's importance! They are a part of it, definitely! But some artists are BRILLIANT and sell almost nothing. My point is just that sales are not a good indicator for quality.

I think the list is pretty accurate. We always like to see our favorites ranked highest, but that's not realistic. So let's face it. Ayu is at #42. End of story.
