3 billion yen is very roughly about 30 million dollars, so does that sound about right?

Of course not. But there is nothing reliable that I can see about this source. Its not just Ayu, the numbers seem off for ALL the artists and people are just giving suggestions for why this might be.

To clear things a little up.^^ (And I hope I'm right... XD)

The article speaks about Ayu as the "Highest grossing female artist of the year". That means Ayu earns 30.906 billion yen as gross salary.
(I don't know how to explain gross, please look it up if you don't know its translation.)
But that's her taxable income! I don't know how high her taxes are, but I guess they are very high. All the more you earn, all the more you have to pay taxes.
So what she has left in the end as her net pay will be considerably lesser.

I hope that helps (and I'm right... XD).

I like the title "The Supernova of Asian Entertainment"... sounds great for a signature or a wallpaper :-)
Another title for the queen.

@ Lady_Alterna
Trick and Next Level have been my favorite albums so far too!
They've both got that dance, pop, and trance/techno style.

And to add to this...

Doesn't matter how much she grosses, shes still a client of Avex Trax. All that money goes to them first. She probably has a contract just like every other music artist where she gets a lump sum payment per album and percentage of profits for CD/DVD/concert ticket sales.

^ Probably. Even many international artists at the height of their popularity don't make as much annually as this "article" claims.
