The main problem here are not really the PVs, they don't really care about it. Everyone told me "These PVs are cute, these are not her best PVs but they are great".
Each times the negative point is the cover and the songs. Most of them wass expecting something else, something with more consistence, something that could have been like the singles she had released in the past, a new hit summer song !
But they all have been a bit disappointed... The songs are "flat" And they told me that the lyrics were okay but she uses some words/expressions that don't really fit a 30yo singer...
Even some hardcore fans told me "Well I bought it because it's Ayu that's all"

<- That's not necessarily my point of view, that's what I've been told.

actually, i don't know why some ppl say this single is not good compared to ayu past summer single. I guess their mind may be affected by the sale figures. Low sales = poor quality???

Just talking about the song, I think "Sunrise" and "Sunset" are really GREAT!!! "Sunrise" is FUN!!! "Sunset" is TOUCHING!!! It is much better that "glitter", "Greatful Days" & "July 1st".
Honestly, the cost of Sunrise/Sunset PV is much lower compared to that of ayu past PV. However, it's still a good PV because I can feel the energy of ayu, dancers and her fans.

The poor cover may affect the sales. But it's not main reason I think. The main reasons are the economy of Japan and the trend of legal song download.

^ about her lyrics:

i hate the lyrics of sunrise...

NEE MOTTO OOKINA KOE DE

My least favorite word in Japanese is motto. I just think it's used way too much.

At least now Ayu's threat has calmed down a bit, but what is so negative with this single? What's the point really?

I think people are mostly upset because of the PVs. When I heard it was going to be a TA PV, and when I heard Humming 7/4 was a TA PV, I expected something just like that, and that's what we got. Because Ayu's so grand with the stuff she does, some people were expecting this grand, great, amazing, spectacular video, and those people were severely disappointed.

I know some people just don't like the songs, but I think most people are just upset with the PVs, and for some people, the PVs just ruined the songs for them.

And the covers aren't pleasing to look at, which caused some people to be disappointed with buying the single.

I honestly don't think it's that strong of a single as people are saying it is. It's good but its not epic

I agree, the covers are terrible. They are up in the top 5 of the worst ayumi covers. She looks so fake and doll like and dull. There's no passion

I personally loved Sunrise and liked Sunset a lot. Sunrise has a really catchy chorus that makes me yell it out loud every time I hear it, it's such a lovable song ^_^ It seems Kaz is starting to have quite a fan base around here lol

^ I like Sunrise a lot too. But really that's the only part of the single that I really feel is good. Everything else ranges from bad(the covers) to average(the pvs and Sunset).

In fact, most of the Japanese doesn't know anything about the sales ! Even the TA members don't check the sales figure..
When I told some of them the sales they were like "Is it a joke ? Come on it's Ayu she will sell more that 150,000 during the first week" So I had to demonstrate them some prooves (thanks oricon !) and show us that even other artists don't sell as much as in the past !
Japanese are not really aware about sales figures aha
So low sales doesn't mean poor quality at all. And here we're not (at least I'm not) saying that's poor quality. 10 nin 10 iro ! (10 persons 10 colors) Everyone has a personal opinion.

Anyway even if the sales all low (personally I think it's okay..!) comparing a some other Ayu's recent single, we can't say that's a flop because she's n°1 !

x->1->1->1 - Hamasaki Ayumi - 36,552 + 12,873 + 8,104 = 57,529
x->2->2->3 - Morning Musume. - 23,301 + 10,946 + 4,784 = 39,031

Morning Musume are #3 today.

Their fans' plans have been crushed, I just hope not a lot of people bought the same single in the 4 versions a lot of times.
Most stores would be closed when the drama ended so probably that wasnt it.

I guess this shows all the extra versions really help! She should have had 3 different versions with many remixs like the last single.

I dun think you get the wrong idea, but it seems to me that you're directly translating NINKI's index into sales figure (yeah I'm confused about the sentence I bold above). NINKI is never meant to be a sales NUMBER indicator. It's just a suvery to see how the oricon members feel about the particular single (or album). If the value is high, it really just means people tend to favor that cd. I never use NINKI to judge the sales figure. Instead, I use it to judge how the general public, or at least the members in oricon, reacts towards the song/album.

I was gonna reply to ayu-marco's msg but you do me a favor .

I dun think the comments made on amazon.jp or other websites were done after the sales figures were up. In fact I believe they existed even before the cd was released. Also, a low budget pv doesn't equal to a poorly executed one. For instance, GREEN (and even Mirrorcle World) looks more expensive than Days, but I believe many of us love Days over that damn guy's directed pv. Looking back to her older pvs like evolution, M, appears, etc., I dun think they use high budgets, but the executions are great, make them really nice pvs.

The last point from marco is correct. The Japanese economy is bad, and ayu is not a power seller anymore, so I actually think the sales are decent.

But I still think the single is still at ayu's lower standard... (yeah just an opinion.. no need to battle lol).

yeah sorry I do know that NINKI figures doesn't equal to actual sales that a single/album will get in due time

I'm just saying that's all

but anyway oh wow I didn't realise how much hatred S/S has receive o_O

am I the only 1 who like the single ? except for the terrible covers , I'm pleased with what ayumi had to offer & the PVs are fine even though it's more subtle/subduced if you were to compare her previous summer PVs

files= legal downloads? if there's really already a million purchased, then why can't Oricon factor that in? they need to collab with an online store.
