I guess it depends on luck & also in which channel in Japan the drama's shown in & the song itself on whether does the song fit the concept of the particular drama it 'endorsed'

Songs which were used in previous dramas which sold massively & did extremely well , be it chart wise or sales wise , like Utada Hikaru's Flavor Of Life (god can't listen to the ballad version now anymore because Hana Yori Dango 2 will keep on replaying in my head ) , Shuuji to Akira's Seishun Amigo , Fukuyama Masaharu's Keshin , ARASHI's truth & Beautiful days

they all have something which probably stuck a chord in the audience when they tuned into

guess the drama audience are not buying Sunrise that much which's unfortunate

on a separate note , ARASHI's current 5 days sales for All the BEST ! stands at a whopping 692,544 now & it will overtake Mr.Children's SUPERMARKET FANTASY's 1st week sales of 707,763 by tomorrow , giving the guys the biggest 1st week sales of Oricon 2009 year soon when the official 1st week sales are released in a matter of time

looks like it's possible for them to be a shoo in triple threat this year in sweeping Oricon's top selling single , DVD & then now probably album , how sweet for a 10th anniversary pressie for them

^ lol Karen you're really excited about their sales I still need to listen to the album. I did like the majority of their singles since Love so sweet, so hopefully I'll like the album.

Anyways It's a good thing Ayu is still hanging in top 5, but the sales suck in general and not just for her.

Well the main reason might be because the drama has average ratings.
Not as much people as other dramas watch that >>> not as many people who hear the song, get interested and buy the single/legally download the song.

well yeah it's ARASHI , 1 of my fave Johnny's bands that I die die support til the end 8D (slightly not as much as KAT-TUN though LMAO )

I guess All the BEST ! is doing even better than I thought initally & considering that virtually no promo's done on their part because they're gearing up to get ready to tour in celebration of their 10th anniversary (aside from some extra magazine promos in the form of TV guides & putting them on the cover of the latest Oct Myojo & Popolo) & that they're relying solely because of their revived popularity since last year , it's amazing

I suppose the majority of people who're buying All the BEST ! consists of long time fans who have supported them since 10 years ago & the other side is current fans who just got onboard their music (like me , since last May) so listening to the 1st disc was really a walk down memory lane

their inital music roots were really hip hop & rock influences & I frankly missed that since the last such song before they went all 'pop was Sakura Sake (I still love the PV til now OK )

hikki aside, those singles would have sold immensely well with or without a drama tie-in.

I don't really think they would.
Well yeah they would still do extremely good but not as extremely good as they did with those tie-ins.
An evident of that is that the sales of the singles highly dropped between the weeks (they had good sales to begin with but they wouldn't reach where they did without the tie-ins).
When the dramas started to air though the sales barely decreased between the weeks and the days after the dramas showed always had big jumps in positions (both for FoL and HEART STATION that had PoL).
The tie-ins gave the songs really small drops and longetivity. The FoL single and HS album could never accomplish that without the dramas.

For example with HEART STATION.

First week - 480,081
Second Week - 135,857
Third Week - 59,935
Last Friends started to air
Fourth Week - 41,792
Fifth Week - 40,539
Sixth Week - 30,226
Seventh Week - 29,905
Eight Week - 23,581
Ninth Week - 25,138
etc.

Yeah, I wish that producers for dramas with potential high ratings would ask her to write songs for their dramas.
I'm sure the songs would correlate as well!

The only 2 singles of ayu that had drama tie-ins and did exceptionally well are LOVE ~Destiny~, SEASONS (and maybe a little Endless sorrow).

I know that the public really liked Voyage too but I don't think the single did that smashing exceptionaly amazing.
Probably the song was better than the drama.

let me see , in terms of sales & debut position wise

KAT-TUN - Bokura no Machi de , Keep the faith , LIPS (ALL THE WAY & the PV is the greatest PV ever made in Johnny's history OK . Must rewatch One Pound Gospel now LMFAO xD xD xD , the drama that started 'it' all for me ) , ONE DROP (the drama didn't had such good ratings but at least it sold better than White X'mas) , RESCUE

NEWS's Yamapi - Daite Senorita (it sold over 500K+ , even more than what NEWS was unable to attain since their best selling single was their debut Kibou ~Yell~ which only lodged 395K+)

ARASHI - WISH (their 1st 300K+ single) , Love so sweet (their 1st 400K+ single) , truth / Kaze no Mukou e (truth was used to promote leader Ohno's debut drama which was last year's Maou & it's their 1st single to cross the 600K mark & of course the single of 2008) & then now this year , Believe / Kumori Nochi , Kaisei (in the running for #1 yearly single for 2009 & KNK's Ohno's solo to be released under the character that he played in Uta no Onii-san ie. Yano Kenta) & Ashita no Kioku / Crazy Moon ~Kimi wa Muteki~ (in the running for #2 yearly single for 2009 & Ashita no Kioku was used for News Zero newcaster's Sakurai's drama 8D)

Nakayama Yuma with B.I Shadow & NYC boys - Akuma no Koi / NYC (ok so the drama Koishite Akuma has gotten some terrible ratings but they debuted at #1 in the 1st week , making them the youngest ever band to debut at the spot & before that it was Morning Museume which had that record but not anymore this year when Johnny's latest debut & temporary group was formed this year in April)

sorry they're all Johnny's related LMAO xD

maybe she will have better luck next time in this area

if not relying on CM tie in's ain't 1/2 bad either since the latest Panasonic LUMIX CM began airing already which probably helped sales to remain steady for the 2nd week

It's HANA YORI DANGO & for the record I'm a strong supporter for the Japanese take of the show & not the Korean one & I don't have any plans to watch the Korean version which's currently airing in Channel U here

& OMG a tie in with another Johnny's guy will be amazing 8D 8D

Well, yes that true. The problem is... hikki still has more than decent sales with or without tie-ins (and of course tie-ins boost a lot). Ayu doesn't. Right now ayu's sales solely depend on hardcore fans. If the song is good enough, some casual buyers will download the song. If it isn't, well then we see sales like t2m. Hikki has a wider spectrum. General public usually buys her music (tho mainly digitally). You can see that hikki's physical sales do decrease as well (since only hardcore fans buy cds). At the same time her digital sales never disappoint us (the hikki fans).

So... since hikki and ayu are 2/3 of my most beloved artists, I wish ayu can pick up the wide spectrum again. We know that the rate of fans leaving are a bit faster than of attracting new fans.

^ I don't really think Hikki would have amazingly selling singles without strong tie-ins, let us remember Be My Last, Passion, Keep Tryin' and HEART STATION/Stay Gold. Even though Passion had a stronger tie-in than Be My Last it didn't sell amazingly well. Back at the time Ayu was still selling around 300k with her singles that didn't have mighty tie-ins.
