There is a difference (at least to me there is). If you want to compare the number of bests, Kumi has almost every other artist I know beat. If you want to compare the number of "compilation albums" in which bests are included, then yes Ayu has almost as many as she does. Attaching the word "best" on an album indicates that they are suppose to be a compilation of your "best" songs. Having a themed compilation album, like All Singles or Ballad themed is different. Kumi (or Avex) has a bad habit of putting that word on everything (which REALLY pisses me off) when in reality only First Things and Third Universe can be considered proper best albums. Second Sessions is just an original album with a mountain of singles on it, Bounce & Lovers is a ballad themed album and Out Works & Collaborations is just that. I honestly don't mean for this to come off as an attack towards your statement but this topic always frustrates me xD;.


Congrats to Kuu for getting #1 though. That was a close call.

^....so maybe Kumi's sales are not doomed to never hit 1 million ever again....she still has no compilation @_@ Then again....this day and age who could afford a 10 disc Kumi compilation anyway x_x

Kumi has 5, best albums fall into the compilation category, but vise versa it is not the same. Kind of like: A person can be black, but black can not be a person.

When just the word BEST is in the title it doesn't mean it's a real BEST!
Thats why third universe will be handled as her 3rd BEST in the media!
I think it's not Kumi's fault that they have the word BEST in her 2 compilations, i think it's just a japanese people engrish failure!

But see I mostly agree with you. Which is why it frustrates me because she doesn't really have that many bests but they keep saying it's a best. It seems like they only do that for the sales and it's misleading and confusing. Because how do we know whether I'm right or you're right? I suppose I think too much into it, but it really gets under my skin lol.

I was just pointing out that there ARE others declining in sales, even Ayu who IS bigger than Kumi I'm well aware Kumi's singles sell low, I mentioned that already + that she's been declining in both singles and albums rapidly right after her peak ie. Black Cherry/2006 era and that scandal. + In her peak Kumi has never managed to sell an album as much as Ayu has even after her major peak. I was only pointing out that others have been affected by declined sales too. Ayu is mentioned when discussing sales etc because, well, she is still a big part of the Japanese music industry. I don't see why it would mean anything if she is mentioned when comparing sales etc but others aren't? I'm not attacking her or bashing her just because I mentioned her. She's my 2nd favourite artist so I don't understand why I would :\

@jbrat - I agree with you, that BEST naming thing is inaccurate but that's why I would ignore the label 'BEST'. Cuz doing it your way, as you said, Kuu would have 3 compilations and 2 bests. And Ayu released 2 A BEST II's so I would count that too. So she would have 3 BESTs and 2 compilations too imo

So i would count them seperately even if they share the A BEST 2, BUT they are totally differet albums/concept/bla...

I didn't say you are attacking/bashing ayu at all, (and I didn't do so myself to you of course), I just wondered why mentioning ayu as in a need to take a glance for how she does, like outselling her or looking at her state compared to others (while the discussion is over kuu and popularity acts - and ayu isn't the most popular right now) like it's some kind if a milestone or something.
It's been like this for years and it maybe it was true to do that on 2005 and maybe 2006 but not onwards.
I would prefer that kuu and ayu would be mentioned on same sentences on more positive, friendly and fun issues and not, woop look at her, she does like everyone/worse than everyone so it's a milestone to sell like her/outsell her.
ayu is not the targer of what is most popular. Maybe that's not fully the intension of it, but it kind of looks like it and it is repeated over and over by multiple users/random users randomly or not.
It's understood that ayu is a leged and that she was one of the most popular artists in japan ever, but today there are a lot of "hotter" things in the market.

i guess ppl complaining she release best album every year since 2005 - 2010 rather than Ayu has 2001, 2003, 2007 and 2008
the only year she absent of best album is 2008 only
