I can't listen to most of the A Song for XX album if I have a headache. It does, in fact, make the headache worse. But nothing else as far as ayu's voice really bothers me although I do absolutely find her "iiii"s squeaky up until about 2003. But even then only the "iiii"s.

I don't mind her squeaky voice, i prefer the lower voice but when she uses the squeaky voice I don't mind it. There is a specific song that i can't listen too though because it does end up giving me a headache. I can't remember the song since I don't listen to it that often but i know it was from around Duty. haha. But except for that I really dont mind the squeaky factor.

actually, ayumi's crazy high pitched voice used to bother me quite a bit. i remember when i first discovered her (in 2001) her voice sometimes was almost painful to my ears! for some reason, i still absolutely loved her anyway! i've definitely been happy to hear her voice lowering over the years.
i think her voice changes over for me with the release of the rainbow album. after that her squeakiness never bothered me as bad, but i do remember there was a lot of "iiiiiiiiiii" on my story though.

i didn't like her voice when it was squeaky - it was her lyrics that fascinated me. i still think that is her best skill. but thank god her voice is better now.

To be honest, this issue kind of divides me.
Ayumi was my first true J-Pop artist, in the sense that she was in no way really connected to the Western world (which is the category I throw Utada Hikaru in). And I'm kind of OCD when I want to listen to a new artist - I tend to start at the very beginning and slowly work my way up so I can experience (for lack of a better word) said artist's evolution. Since I started with "poker face", I have to say, her nasal voice grew on me by the time I had listened to the debut album from beginning to end. It sounds weird, but I'm actually kind of sad her voice isn't what it used to be. It may have been annoying to some, but I found it more attractive than her current, more husky voice (which I still kind of like, don't get me wrong). I guess her current vocal quality is at least more suited for the style of music she makes now. What I find funny is that a lot of people think Ayu is such a horrible, high-pitch singer. Man, they have not heard half of the J-pop world then. X_X

The first Ayu album I listened to was MY STORY then I listened to her older albums and her recent ones and I was quite surprised I mean it sounds so different but well it was definitely unique.

Ayu is Ayu. Her voice squeak is her natural voice. So, why they bother about it. She can't change her voice.

My first Ayu song was You PV and I didn't like it at all, only when I heard a little bit of Rainbow in Ayu Ready ending I fell for it. Actually I couln't believe it's the same person.

I found her squeaky voice was charming and part of my initial attraction to her.
She sounded just so different from all the singers I was exposed to before...the music and the vocals were just so unusual that I kept on listening over and over. It never particularly bothered me at all...nobody I know really listens to Ayu or any Jpop though, although a few have heard Mirrorcle World and like that. Maybe our friends and netizens are just so used to deeper voices from singers that a high voice is too strange for them to listen to? I wouldn't know how else to explain that... |

Thats because none of these people heard YUKI sing.

actually a lot of my japanese and japanese-loving friends prefer her squeaky voice to her post-2003 voice @_@ i like both but it depends on the song~ i have not heard a single singer sing every single song in a way that satisfies me so it really goes to show that no one is perfect

I like "Sparkle" because it reminds me of the good old days when her "iiiii"'s were at their peak of eardrum destruction

Hahahaha! I forgot about her! Lol I was gonna mention hitomi, but Yuki takes the cake.
I don't mind ayu's squeaky voice from the past. I just hated it on the remixes when they would speed up the vocal track and REALLY make her sound like a Chippette... |

I actually like singers with a unique voice. I prefer a odd voice like Ayu's to a typical "beautiful voice". Like Shakira, I love her vocals. Even Kuu has a really cool and different voice. But, yeah, lol, I love singers that sound different. It sets them apart.
