can any one recommend me...

okay, i listen to very little American music. (mostly European and, obviously, Asian.) but can anyone recommend me some American (or any western) music that isn't generic? i feel most music nowadays is too...bland. and basically generic. not ALL music but a lot of the music i've heard. and i barely watch any t.v so i don't know what's out there.

i want to hear music with deep lyrics but that also has awesome music. or maybe music without any lyrics? basically, i guess i wanna hear something different.

its hard to say. i havent focused on a lot of american music lately. . .but my friends are tryin to get me into some indie bands which are very much underrated. i cant recall most of their names though now so its irrelevant. ill get back to u on that XD

well aside from that. im currently listening to the Script . . .but maybe u can say theyre generic idk. they relax me.

Well, my advice to you is to go on last.fm, get on the last.fm radio, type in a genre you're interested in then listen. It's reallllly not a good idea to label western music as generic, there's a huge variety!

I mean, even though Madonna is quite generic these days, her older works are amazing, listen to her album "Ray of Light".
Some western artists I enjoy are:

Alanis Morissette (her latest album "Flavors of Entanglement" is very interesting to listen to), Catatonia (they've split up now, but I love their album "International Velvet"), Émilie Simon (if you like Kanon Wakeshima, you'll love her voice), Juanes (he's really charismatic and he's talented! I recommend his album "Mi Sangre"), KT Tunstall (She's very bluesy and rocky, I love her! ), Lisa Mitchell (her debut album is the best I've heard from Australia LOL), Kate Nash (you might not like her, but her lyrics are undeniably true to life! ROFL), La Roux (they're quite popular atm, they're quite good..), McFLY (they're really fun to listen to and they write their own music! ), Regina Spektor (she is soooo talent), Shakira (yes, her sound is more "commercial", but she's soo experimental on her Spanish albums), Tori Amos and Wir sind Helden (they're awesomely catchy!).

Are you my clone? I listen to almost all of those artists; we totally have the same taste in music.

Anyways, I've been trying to find some new western music lately too and I've gotten into Ladytron lately their stuff is pretty cool. You can try Bjork, she's in between albums right now but her stuff is in a genre of it's own and she writes her own lyrics and music. You can also try Garbage, they're on hiatus or w/e but they have some really good songs. Gorillaz is also really good but they lack a little on lyrics side but they more than make up for it with the music. Also the Yeah Yeah Yeahs they're just awesome.

@Strawbari: i love indie bands as well. xD and anything relaxing is awesome, i'll try them out.

@zyoeru: i love Madonna (favorite album being Ray Of Light of hers and possibly one of my all time favorites in general. ), Alanis Morissette, KT Tunstall, Shakira, and Tori Amos already! but i haven't heard of all the others. thanks for the recommendations.

@RyRyMini: i like all music! male or female, doesn't matter. although i'm want to listen to more male vocalists.

@riozz: i'm already in love with that album!

@hsienko: i'm already like the biggest Bjork fan ever! xD and i love Gorillaz already. i've heard some Yeah Yeah Yeahs. the rest i've not heard of, i'll try those out. thanks!

time to get on youtube/downloadin'! xD

EDIT: now that i think about it, i listen to quite A LOT of American music, haha. xD i guess i needed something fresh.

I used to like Vanessa Carlton when I was into American music. She is a very talented musician, she composes and writes the lyrics herself and she plays piano very well. You can try her latest album called heroes and thieves. "Hands on me" is one of the best song I ever heard. Dont forget her pas work like "A thousan miles", "twilight", "white houses" etc

You should try Bajofondo, it's an Argentinian-Uruguayan band. As you said, something really different, since the genre is instrumental electro-tango

Santigold!!!!! She only has only one album so far "Santogold", but it's amazing. I still listen to it alot after almost 2 years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCeZzW54a2o

Also M.I.A. her music is crazy. And so are her lyrics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iG4b9GKX9Q

Nelly Furtado's 2nd album "Folklore"
I know she's mainstream and all but her 2nd album is very different and the lyrics are really great. Too bad the album flopped in the states. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogHDTOUhmxQ

Dido - Her music isn't generic and she has a great voice. I recommend her album "No Angel". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qCt70ungb4

Or maybe Duffy? She has great soul/pop/rock songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhZ5-L9znt8

Katie Melua - this girl has an amazing voice, this is my favorite song of hers, love the lyrics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5lofPE01UI

Metric - my fav indie band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00KBHNy4kW4

Sorry, I got a bit carried away.. lol

Algora, he's spanish and makes pop/electro music, he's brilliant
Chris Garneau, he's american and makes this soft and slow music, very great.
Chevelle, a heavy rock band, their latest album is brilliant
Sean Watkins, he was part of Nickel Creek (NOT Nickelback) and makes some kind of relaxing experimental pop
Chuck Wicks, a pop-flavored country artist
Current 93, I don't know where they're from, but they make neofolk
Ely Guerra, a mexican rock artist
Islaja, she's finnish, but maybe you don't know her, she plays psychedelic folk
Juan Son, he debuted last year with an experimental pop album, he's from México
Kevin Max, american, plays rock, pop and not generic at all
Lisa Germano, like someone said once, she plays 'sadcore' music. Depressing and dark music, brilliant.
Roch Voisine, a pop balladeer from Canada
Rocky Votolato plays alt-country, folk and rock music
Ximena Sariñana is a mexican singer, a little out-there

Yeah, nice list, try them
