I feel like this commercial would be rather ineffective in the US... Why is it so popular in Japan? It doesn't exactly encourage me to buy (another) IPhone.

Well, that was actually one of the more boring ones. Some are quite funny.

There's a whole series of them and the point is that the characters are familiar, everybody knows them. It's not as much that they directly push a product, but more that they simply use it or show it and everyone's like "OMGOTOUSANHASONEHOWCUUUUUUTEINEEDONETOO".
