It's an immense populair girl group, with singles selling above a million copies.
I don't know much about them, except they have like A LOT of members, all young girls dancing in bikini's, and they had a computer animated member.

There music is not really what I call great, but that's just my opinion

An idol group that has 48 members split into three groups - A, K and B - thus the name AKB48. Each group in AKB releases a different version of a song when they release a single, so people speculate their sales are so high because all three versions count towards the total sale; and fans will usually buy all three versions.

Their music isn't terrible, I don't like them personally; however! I have to admire them for reviving the music industry in Japan. I never thought we'd see anyone sell over a million again.

Oh, and the computer-generated member was a sort-of joke. A new member was revealed on their website (?) and a few days later fans were told it was just an animated girl made up from the features of their favourite AKB members.
