I'm releived I'm not the only one disliking it. It's terrible, really.
I can't really put words on this thing haha!

I'm glad it's not a "real" PV. Duty deserves something muuuch better and clever.
I'd rather have no PV for old songs than this kind of stuff.

This video (or PV, I still don't know how to call it) has more money than any of her recents PVs. And, as someone previously said, "progress" deserved a PV like this (though I don't like the song).

omg I spent my morning watching these clips. The whole ~Tale of Ayumi Hamasaki seems likes it's amazingly over-the-top in all the right ways. I really wish there was a better way to experience it without the pachinko machine itself lol.

@hidekirby
It seems to me the people loving it are mostly those with no idea about design and videos whatsoever. I'm no expert myself but know enough to see that this is not amazing and the people with actual design background I talked to about this video agree.
Still I think considering it's part of a pachinko machine it's ok, but compared to proper PVs it's...erm...

This PV is really cheap, it's mostly cheap CGI...Virgin Road just recently broke the 1 million dollar mark making it one of the most expensive music videos shot in 2010(if not THE most expensive one)...BRILLANTE especially probably wasn't cheap either so...I have no idea what you are talking about.
And I happen to love the progress video, it's different but in a great way. I sometimes watch it just for that rollercoaster-esque rush when watching it right.

@isthisLOL: lol I don't like it that much either...but...that's kinda well...lets just say, yes, most people here don't have any idea about film or design, but, it's the same with her music, and people like what they like...it's hard to push the "people just don't know" card cause...it eliminates everyone...and well, be happy when you're left on top! ;P

I personally find it hilarious that so many people think this is so badass

This PV-whatever thing is so ridiculously cheesy and stupid. And her dancers. My god. Thanks for taking me back to those crappy days...

But hey, at least she looks pretty! And at least the song kicks ass! It could be worse. It could have been something released after 2006. And then where would we be?

Second this.

The fact that a video is made for an eleven-years-old song is however amazing.

I'm pretty sure Progress itself was very expensive to produce by music videos standarts... Not only it's not a usual technique (what always makes things expensive), it was shot covering a huge area, what means they spent more than usual on transporting themselves and equipment...

---

The anime videos were pretty bad too... Ayu is overdramatic herself, but her anime version had a dramatic face from 5 to 5 seconds @____________@

The main portion of progress was made of stop-motion photography in the Los Angeles area if I recall correctly. And for that they only needed a camera and someone in the area. I doubt they actually used any specific lighting for it and stuff. It's the type of music video you find often in amateur film because it is so cheap(but requires lots of repetitive work, which can get VERY boring and annoying)
If you wanna be cost-effective having one person walking around for 2-3 days(and driving at times) covers that. Then there are the few actors involved. I think the two studio scenes were probably the most expensive thing of the video...and they were simple make-up and outfits with a white background and a greenscreen...
And I honestly doubt they paid anything for the locations except maybe the indoor parts so...I have no idea where that PV got expensive? I would have guessed it's the cheapest FIVE PV(with beloved maybe)
That said I adore that video, but I think it was quite cheap.

Actually Duty's PV isn't her best PV ever and yes it's extremely tacky as well. The CG seemed popped out from 2001 and it's pretty odd to listen to Ayu with her old voice.
But I don't really care if it's been made by a 6 years old director because the monsters, her dancers turned into dark angels and DJ OZMA fighting with a guitar while he's riding a motorcycle are hilariously epic.

You can still like something even if it's not the most gorgeous video ever though .

Well, I'm not an expert on American Geography, but they needed at least a beach, a desert and a big city... Even if the big city is near the desert and the beach, it already covers a larger area than your usual music video, what makes stuff more expensive per se... Still, on the first part of the PV, most people on streets seen to be Asian (I tried to pause the video and check, but it's so fast @_@) and the signs are written in (what I suppose is) Japanese, so, the first part was shoted in Japan and the second in LA...

Also, by the making off u can see it wasn't only one person taking the photos, but a small crew... The fact that this is not a usual technique for this kind of PV contributes cuz u need to get stuff from zero, different from more usual things that already have stuff done (I doubt the monsters and the background for the Pachinko video were produced exclusively for that video for example).

But I never said it was her most expensive music video, just that it is most likelly most expensive than most music videos, cuz PVs tend to be somewhat cheap to produce...

And I'm pretty sure the cheapest video from FIVE was ANother song... They didn't need to pay for dancers, cuz ayu used hers, they didn't need to pay for choreography, cuz Ayu troup has it, the outfits were used on the past and everything happens on only one place...

Still, neither are her cheapest video...

Afaik beach, city and desert-y area are all close to LA. And was there really a small crew for the photographed parts? That just...doesn't make sense to me haha They didn't need lighting, they didn't need any heavy equipment, they needed simple make-up for exactly ONE person in each of those scenes...sometimes for no person...they just had to calculate the speed they wanted to emulate, find the right routes and then take a photo each x meters according to that speed.
And damn, I forgot about that opening japanese part xD Still I doubt the people shown were even paid so that wasn't much either.

It may have been more expensive than a video shot purely in front of a greenscreen(well, it probably was) but I wouldn't call that an average one haha That's a Beyonce-esque cheapass one xD

Maybe they had to sit in LA traffic for long periods of time and they spent a lot on gas.

Of course she didn't paied for every single person in the video xD I was just trying to figure out if it was really Japan or a trick

In the end of the day, they needed to record the process to make a making off So, they needed a bigger crew... Like, 3 or 4 people... And if the actors were recorded on place, and not on a studio with green screen, it all turns out being even more expensive... Both cuz need to transport the actor, and cuz they need to actually film it (what would explain the small crew) matching the photos...

They are in Japan much longer then for only the opening. They are in Japan for quite some time. Pretty much half of the video? After the momement speeds up they travell through Tokyo some. Harajuku is very easy to spot for an example. I think it's not befor somewhere 3 minutes they actually arrive in L.A.

Anywho, I don't think this PV was cheap to make, neither expensive. Somewhere in between. While it's still simple to walk around in the desert taking photos all day they had to match up that walk within a day (weather looking sunny and bright in all photos expect the last ones). I think they had to divide it into several of days. It's transport in Japan and Tokyo, transport to the US and back, special effects for the plane in the air, subway and such.
