I do agree that there would be controversy but the fact remains that it didn't work out because she didn't have a structure built to sustain a long distance marriage, one that span nearly half a world away.

If she didn't want any of this she could have just gone about it silently and when all was done she could have said it in passing and not have it blow up only to rush off for the Middle East. That even looks suspicious but, who really knows.
