i hated it. i thought for sure the song i was listening to was one of those chipmunk versions of a song where they raise the pitch to be unnecessarily high
i think it was a song from ASFXX or LOVEppears that i first heard, can't remember which one. my friend had made me listen to it and i thought he was a total freak for liking it.

It was EVOLUTION, and I was dismayed that the woman with this fake voice outsold Utada Hikaru. I never listened to anything else she did for years until I accidentally saw her perform BLUE BIRD on Music Station. Little by little I fell in love as I tried other things, although it still took me a very long time before I ever appreciated Evolution.

After being exposed to the variety of vocals in Jpop over the years, I realize that, in large part, my dislike for her voice way back when had far more to do with my idea of what a "proper" singing voice is (i.e. Western divas) than anything else. I was fortunate enough to realize that good music is not contingent on a diva's voice, and that not having a diva's voice does not mean your voice sounds bad or that you have no skill.

I liked it and honestly had no problem, just found evolution a little weird because of her voice.

My first impression was that she sounded like she inhaled helium or something. I was listening to Fairyland, and it felt like her actual voice must be quite low, but she's on helium. Overall, she sounded weird and strained to me, even though I'd been exposed to Jpop for some 10 years by then. I liked the music right away though, so this weirdness never stopped me from loving her

Well my first song was evolution and i was totally mesmerized by it
The second sond that made me a fan of Ayu was is this LOVE and by the time i was trying to find
some of her older stuff with the help from a friend(kudos to Sora from Serbia)
As for the vocals i was really surprised by her highpitched voice and i was really looking forward
to hear how does she sound live?
Dome tour 2001was the first live experience to me and i thought of it as ok-kinda average but the real factor that made me love her and respect her as an artist was her meaningful lyrics,dreamlike arrangments and artistic feel of her PVS

I remember the first song for me back in 2002 or so was M. I didnt thought much about how she sing or what kind of vocal range thingy that she have, I just focus on her appearance and how cool the PV's. Just when I bought my first Ayu's album which is A BEST, I getting like her vocal and pay a bit attention of it. Not so bad I guess.
