I agree, Kumi's covers are aiming for something different: vulnerable or even desolate. Ayu's are more sultry. Interesting. Now that we're comparing the covers, I kind of like ayu's a bit more for the simple fact that her photoshoot looks a bit more "raw" (lacking the word right now), there's a bit of a grain. Although Kumi's appearance seems just as disheveled there's a more polished look to the overall picture. But that's just me.

Yes , there is a grain. Her skin isn't smooth. It's with such kind of details that you see it's a professional work.

The covers in wallpaper make me just happy each time I switch on my laptop. ^^ They're sooooo great.
