Shige to star in play "Modern Boys"

It was announced on Jan 25th that Shige will be starring in “Modern Boys”, his first stage play in about 3.5 years. This play was also performed by Kimura Takuya in 1994, and Shige will be playing the same role as Kimura did, Yahagi Kanade.

Set just before the Second Sino-Japanese War, Yahagi is a student who aspires to be part of the Proletariat Cultural Movement. While trying to escape the pursuit of the police, he runs into a theatre, where he ends up becoming a popular revue performer and finding his place.

The play will be directed by Isshiki Takashi (“Kirin ga kuru”, "Ieyasu, Edo wo Tateru" etc.) and will run in Tokyo at the New National Theatre from April 3rd to 16th, and in Osaka at the COOL JAPAN WW Hall from Apr 28th to 30th.

Shige’s comments:

After reading the script, I felt that this is a work that ought to be performed now. The early, turbulent years of the Showa era saw overseas influences starting to show up in both ideology and entertainment, but these two ended up clashing.

To not be able to create works that you want to due to censorship, or to not be able to perform plays as you wish… while the circumstances in 2021 are different now, there are definitely areas of resonation.

Is it ideology or entertainment that can help a society become better? What does it mean to lead a life true to yourself? I’ll do my best to perform this role, passionately, to the best of my ability. Just like how Yahagi Kanade brought people enthusiasm and excitement through the revue.

Kato Shigeaki's novel nominated for Yoshikawa Eiji Literary Prize for New Writers

Kato Shigeaki's (NEWS) novel 'Alternate' has been nominated for the 42nd 'Yoshikawa Eiji Literary Prize for New Writers.'

The 'Yoshikawa Eiji Literary Prize for New Writers' is awarded to a new writer with the most promising future among writers, who released an excellent work from January 1 to December 31 of 2020.

Besides 'Alternate,' Ashizawa You's 'Yogoreta Te wo Sokode Fukanai,' Takeda Ayano's 'Aisarenakute mo Betsu ni,' Tsujido Yume's 'Juu no Wa wo Kuguru,' and Terachi Haruna's 'Mizu wo Nuu' have been nominated for the award.

The winner will be announced on March 2.

HYDE appears on Tegoshi Yuya's YouTube channel

Tegoshi Yuya and HYDE's talk video has been uploaded onto Tegoshi's official YouTube channel.

The two, who had been friends from before, held a talk session on a special programme titled 'Hatsu Taidan HYDE x Tegoshi Yuya Birthday Special Talk!,' which was broadcast on ABEMA on HYDE's birthday, January 29. The YouTube video was also filmed on this day.

In the video, Tegoshi talks about his feelings toward HYDE and hands him a birthday present. On the video, Tegoshi tweeted, "Finally, this person has appeared on Tegoshi Yuya's channel. I'm so happy. I need to make this thumbnail my heirloom and put it up as decoration lol."

On Feb 10th, the tour dates for STORY were announced via JFC email and Johnny's net. This will be a physical tour, and the audience will likely be capped at either 5,000 or 50% of the venue capacity, as Johnny's announced earlier in their concert guidelines (in Japanese) released earlier this week.

It was also mentioned in the FC email that the final show at Aichi will be streamed live, though no details about the stream have been released at the moment.

Tickets are priced at JPY 8,200 each and FC members can log in from now till Feb 17th, 17:00 JST to ballot.

"Alternate" Wins 42nd Yoshikawa Eiji Literary Award For Newcomers



It was announced on Mar 2nd that “Alternate” has won the 42nd Yoshikawa Eiji Literary Award For Newcomers, along with “Aisarenakutemo betsu ni” by Takeda Ayano. The award is given to new writers who have released their work between the period of Jan 1st to Dec 31st 2020, and who shows the most potential (as a writer).

The selection committee met at 3pm that day, and reached their decision on the winners about 2 hours later. Shigematsu Kiyoshi (“Knife”, “Vitamin F”, “Ryusei Wagon” etc.) represented the selection committee and said that “Alternate” was selected to be one of the winning works due to reasons like how well-written the unclear/uncertain emotions of youth were, and how while it’s an ensemble novel, each character was properly developed. One of the selection members read “Alternate” when it was serialised, and said the novel version was a lot better. The novel version wasn’t just a compilation of the serialised chapters, but one that was released after the serialised chapters were properly relooked at and rewritten to become even better. Credit was given to this as well, for how it shows growth.

At the press conference, Shige said that he’s genuinely surprised, but really happy. One of the selection members, Ijuin Shizuka (“Nyubo”, “Ukezuki”, “Goro goro” etc.), told him that he should just be happy at times like these, so Shige’s trying his best to feel the joy.

Shige spoke again of the complex he felt about being allowed to release novels because he’s from Johnny’s, and how while he was honoured, he also felt like he cut into the literary world just like that. He’s grateful for how kindly the literary world has treated him, and felt that with this award, he’s finally able to give back to the literary world. This is going to be a new start for him.

He shared how his debut novel, “Pink and Grey”, was written about 10 years ago, with the first draft written between the late February till the end of March. There’s no way he could forget about 311 that happened back then. Personally, it was also a rough period. Looking back, he has come a long way as a writer, but how he’s not stopped writing for the past 10 years is probably what brought him to where he is today. This makes him want to give the Shige 10 years younger a pat on his back.
