maybe you want to try Mika Nakashima or Kiroro? The first one you should've heard plenty about, she's mainly jazz/acoustic-sounding so they are good to relax to. The second one's less famous here but they were famous in Japan. It's a duo of two girls, one vocals and the other one plays the piano. I'll upload a song or two of theirs soon if you want me to.

other recommendations:
Kou Shibasaki - great voice, she's a famous actress and her songs are very popular in Japan.
ZONE - girl band, a few songs are great.
Ken Hirai - he's supposed to be R'n'B but don't let that turn you off cuz his ballads are great. He also sings in flawless English.
You Hitoto - can't really describe her style...but personally I think she's probably as unique as Shiina Ringo.

Well, I downloaded 5 or 6 Utada songs from a site, I don't know what songs they were, but each sounded the same, like the repetitive American R&B stuff. She's got a nice voice, but I just don't like her stuff. Usually by the end of the first song I listen to, if I don't like it, then I probably won't like it. I did think maybe I was being too quick to decide, so I downloaded some more, and I just couldn't take to her stuff. It's hard to explain, but you know that feeling you get when you listen to something you really like, that pleasure and enjoyment you get from it? I just didn't feel any pleasure or enjoyment listening to Utada; I felt nothing.
If you could upload some of the artists mentioned I'll listen to them, thanks. I'm not sure about Ken Hirai, because of the R&B thing, or You Hitoto, as I don't like Shiina Ringo - I saw a PV of hers on TV last year and I didn't like her. I don't like indie acts [that's a name for acts we have here that don't seem to fit into the main genres, they have their own unique sound; it's short for independent].

Well, Utada really has a lot diverse stuff. Maybe you downloaded a bunch of songs from 'First Love'. That was her first album and it mainly had regular r&b. However, both Distance and Deep River are way beyond that.

How would you describe those songs? She seems to me to be an R&B artist, especially as her American album was produced by American R&B producers, which I know I wouldn't like, as I don't like any of the current American artists, no matter what genre... no matter what it is, it all sounds the same, dull and repetitive.

I'd have a hard time describing things, but I could go and upload a couple of songs, if you'd like that.

Here's a couple of songs, they're all personal favorites of mine. Mind, I'm not an R&B fan at all, so you just might like them as well.

Automatic (live) - A song from the debut album First Love; however, this live rendition is sublime.
Colors - A more recent song, brilliant.
Final distance - Beautiful ballad.
Hikari - The theme song for Kingdom Hearts (there's also an English version, 'Simple and clean'), awesome.
Letters - Brilliant song.
Traveling - Genius, upbeat.

Chihiro Onitsuka is currently my fave and can be yours too!
also make sure to check out Tommy Febuary, Its Tomoyo's (Brilliant Green) solo, her album is like 80's dance stuff, but its still really good and catchy
DO AS INfinity - awsome band, nothing to hard or soft
and of Course, Utada Hikaru and Mika Nakashima, they have great ballads/voices

Thanks for the uploads, but I only liked two of them - Hikari and Letters. I saw the Colors PV on TV last year, I thought the song was strange. The other songs seem really standard, like any of the stuff you get here. There's just some artists people can't take to, they just can't feel anything when listening to their stuff, guess that's the way for this one. I don't hate it, but I just can't get interested in it... if that makes any sense.
I like 80s music, so maybe I'll give Tommy february6's stuff a try.

ayuchanfan, I've already listened to some Do As Infinity stuff, I didn't really like it, it was just too indie. I'll try the other artists you mentioned, if I can find their stuff to download.

Hey, no problem, that's still two out of six. And indeed, be sure to give Tommy february6 a few spins!

I'll upload a couple.

BTW, have you ever heard anything by Ryuichi Sakamoto? Not your typical Jpop at all, but great music.

/edit/

Can't take my eyes off of you - Indeed, a cover song, but it's great.
Everyday at the bus stop
I'll be your angel
Koi ha nemuranai
Magic in your eyes
Sepia memory
Tommy favorite macaron

80s galore!

LOL, I just chose some random songs (although I do love all of these). I just don't have enough webspace to store every Tf6 song out there. XD

I'll upload their songs for you by Tuesday, cuz I don't have the CD here with all the songs on it. Just to let you know. =)

Thanks for uploading these... it's not the kind of 80s music I like, it's too Stock/Aiken/Waterman [the people who produced Kylie Minogue's early stuff in the 80s] for me. I liked Can't Take My Eyes Off You and I'll Be Your Angel, but the rest I didn't like. I've heard the name Ryuichi Sakamoto mentioned, but not heard anything yet.

gakkun, thanks, please let me know when you have them up

It's definitely 'that kind of 80s'. Somehow, it reminds me of Yellow Magic Orchestra and Kraftwerk, too.

I'll see if can upload some Sakamoto.

Right here.

Enjoy!

Yuko Sasaki isnt very well known, but her song 'Pure Snow' is gorgeous! I'll try and upload it when i get home from school (3:30 Eastern Coast USA time)

COLORS is my favorite Hikki song. I'm sad u dont like it. Hikari is really nice; you should check out Simple and Clean, the english take on it. The PlanitB remixes of Simple and Clean/Hikari are also worth a listen.

A Lot of ELT's stuff seems repetitive, with like the music and stuff, but i love them.

Some of DAI's stuff borders rock, but there are the good songs like Fukai Mori (the 2nd ending theme for Inuyasha), Heart, Desire, Snail, Tooku Made, and probably a lot of others i havent heard.

the only Namie songs i like are Alarm and As Good As. So i cant really input anything on her ^^;

If you like trance-y sounding music (something naturally-esque) I would suggest globe. They have a lot of trance music stuff, like Genesis of Next.

Takako Uehara, even though i've only heard 2 of her songs, is also nice. I have her single 'air' and i love Shizumanai Taiyou.

I agree with Cory, The Brilliant Green are really good, especially 'Rainy Days Never Stays'.

Day After Tomorrow is also a good one IMO. There songs are poppy.

I hope i gave some decent suggestions... i'm also on AIM if you would like to contact me to get stuff from these artists ^_^

I like ELT, I downloaded a couple of their albums and I liked them I tried some stuff from DAI, but I didn't really like them, I liked Fukai Mori though. I heard Tooku Made but didn't like it.
I'm not into dance or trancey stuff - in general I don't like that kind of thing.
I saw the 'Rainy Days Never Stays' PV on TV last year - I loved that song, but when I downloaded more of The Brilliant Green I didn't like it as it was too indie.
If you could send me some stuff on AIM that would be good, but with the time difference it might be difficult. I rarely use the comp after 9pm my time [Ireland], so the only time would be around this time.
