I agree as well Nelly Furtado and Natalie Imbruglia.

But for Jpop I would have to say AILE, Hitomi Shimatani, and HI-D

I think Shimatani is overrated. Her voice is nice, but she doesn't contribute much to her music, only lyrics to 2 or 3 songs.

But then again, she is a pop star, but I always have much high expectations from Japanese popstars, they usually write a lot more lyrics, and even some music.

Don't get me wrong, I love her stuff (I have two albums), but I'd like her to make more contributions to her music. I guess some don't care what artists contribute, but I do, and it really bothers me when they don't do much other than sing and dance...

I'm one of those people who don't really care whether the artist writes & produces her own music or not. I do respect artists more who do tho , but I doesn't weigh in wheter I like that artist or not. I respect hitomi & ayu for writing their lyrics , but I'd personally like them as much even if their lyrics where written by someone else.

but anyway , I don't think Natalia Imbruglia is that underrated. just because she isn't mega-popular doesn't mean she's not given the credit she derserves. 'Shiver' was the last song by her that got major airplay and that wasn't that long ago. and I've seen music videos off all her albums airing on MTV.

IMO I always feel proud when my favourite singers write their own lyrics or compose, but I don't prioritise it that much, especially with those that can sing very well. That after all is what I would expect out of a singer. I find Hitomi's singing great.

I find her underrated sales wise.

I LOVE LAURA!!!!!! She was pretty popular here since she released "La Soledad", her singles are always topping the charts here, and now that she's back with "Escucha" she's topping everything again!!!!

I dunno if she's underrated cuz here she has a big fanbase, and i agree that Natalie is like, VERY underrated. Her new album is wonderful!!! Wish she could get more promotion like in the "Torn" days.

I agree about the voice but some of her songs are a boring -.-
She won an award this year, dont remember which one but she is the first italian singer who got it and she was very very happy, even our president Ciampi congrats with her ^_^
I would like to add Eros Ramazzotti too, he is a very good artist (he made a song with Anastacia this year the title is I belong to you ^^)
I agree with Natalia Imbruglia I love her and I also agree with Linkin' Park, Hitomi Shimatani and Misia ^^ I would add U-ka Saegusa in DB and Nami Tamaki too ^^

I'd like it if Anastacia got big in the US. Emma Bunton's solo stuff is also surprisingly good, like was said. She's the Spice that deserves success.

Anastacia is awesome! She's really big in the gay population and techno clubs... I like more of her upbeat songs because I got one of her CD's and they were kinda slow... not what I like from her...

Her voice is so unique... I thought she was soul singer... but she's blonde and white! Cool voice for her face!

Emma Bunton, definitely, she should have success here. So does Imogen Heap, she needs recognition too. Although her solo stuff isn't as good as her collaboration with Guy Sigworth...Frou Frou

I am so sorry for posting here, but I just had to mention an artiste:

Rachel Stevens.
Goddammit, why are her stuff so unappreciated everywhere!!! I'm so frustrated. I've been doing some light research on pop artistes and I found out some sad stuff. Its about Rachel Stevens and her bloody amazing sophomore solo effort.
Quote:
Over in pop land Rachel has been adopting similar sounds and releasing songs that, if she weren't Rachel Stevens, would be lauded by critics everywhere.
That is true. IF she was Kylie, Come And Get It would have sold billions by now. Its very unfair, to say the least.
Quote:
Come and Get It is quite simply a pop tour-de-force that deserves to sell a billion copies. Please, don't let this end up as a forgotten classic.
All these are from critics all over the world. How can people overlook her talent just because of her name and image? Its already a forgotten classic by now.
Quote:
First Week Sales: 15,000+
First month Sales: 60,000+
Chart Entry Position: #28
Chart Peak Position: #28
Because of this dissapointing achievement, she was dropped off Polydor records. Only 19 Records is sticking on with her. Its just so depressing to find out all these.
Quote:
What's so horrible with something that just sounds good from start to finish? In these days where the biggest selling album of the week is often a Now compilation album rather than a single-artist work, **** cohesion and definitely **** the concept of “the artist.”
Thats so true. And thats from those dudes who reviewed Ayu's My Story. They gave Rachel an "A-".

Most artists mentioned here are very famous, I haven't seen any new names at least, so I woulden't call any of them underrated...... Mostly I think that music that many people don't even give a listen may be underrated, music they don't bother listening to because of names and such given. Like f.ex. j-pop.

I'd have to disagree. Just because they're famous and well-known, it doesn't meant they're appreciated for their efforts in the music industry.

People like Natalie Imbruglia is underrated because her modelling career overshadows her singing career. People look at her and assume she's a quack singer just because she's so beautiful.

Nelly Furtado is underrated for unknown reasons. People only remember I'm Like A Bird and then ignore her, probably because of her folk-styled music. These days, any form of hip-hop seems to be doing exceptionally well in Billboard charts. For example, although Nelly Furtado's I'm Like A Bird was considered successful in the US, it only managed a meager number 9 as its peak there. Snoop's Drop It Like It's Hot managed a hell lot better.

Gorrilaz used to be underrated because people never took them seriously. They are cartoons... Their music was good though, and they're getting better and better these days.

Blur and Robbie Williams are the ones I dont really know much about. Blur makes some good music, I also remember Graham Coxon's solo album which had nice tracks. Robbie Williams is like god in the UK, he releases a string of super successful songs there. However, when these people release songs in the US, nothing much surfaces. Strange, I think this indicates music taste. And it makes them underrated because of their genres. Blur on the other hand... I dont know much about them lately. Robbie Williams is successful in Asia too.

Anastacia is ignored in the US somehow. I dont know why though, her songs are the type that get huge airplay, yet they don't get much over there. At least she's doing well in the UK. I'm Outta Love, her debut single, managed #5 in the UK but only #92 in the US. The album however charted at 168 in the US.

Hanson is ignored just because people perceive them as "pretty boys on guitars". I'm also guilty of not listening to them because of their image. They have nice singles though. Just like Rachel Stevens. Rachel's superior songs get overshadowed by her public image too often. She models and appears in ads.

Emma Bunton released Free Me and Maybe as singles in the US. They were very successful, hitting number 6 in the Dance charts. But the album failed to chart. The opposite with the UK. People don't buy it because her image is too sexy? Kinda like Utada. Except Utada managed to chart and then dissapeared.

If I was incorrect or you disagree or you wanna add, please put your 2 cents worth.

I shoulden't have posted in this thread at all, lol, cause I really don't think there's such a thing as an "underrated" artist. If people hear a song and start to like it, perhaps they'll buy it. No matter how much effort is put into the music, no matter the artists' image, people still might not care if they don't like the music that much. I don't want to insult anybody, but popular music is still popular music no matter how much effort put into it. Image is of course an important part of the music industry and when image and songs fits perfectly and the songs manage to stand out in a certain way (still being a part of the popular music scene though) to a LOT of people it gets really popular.

I don't "disagree" with what you've written on every artist, it's just I don't think it makes any sense in saying that he or she deserves better for some kind of reason. People buy/ listen to the music they do for a reason mostly, no matter what reason it is, no-one should say they're wrong to do so. (Which one indirectly does by saying he/she is underrated and deserves better)

F.ex you'd might say that while anastacia's songs are decent, I really HATE her voice, it gets on my nerves and I really can't stand listening to it through a full song. It's not that I don't respect her music or anything like that, but I'd never buy anything with her voice in it.

( I hope this diden't come out as a flame, I diden't mean to critizise your post in particular or anything like that, I was just writing down my thoughts on the entire subject.. lol. If I offended anyone I apologize )

Dont worry, that wasnt flamey. Yep, not buying an artiste because of her voice is one thing too. Thats not underrated I think.
