Buying CDs

How many of you make the effort to buy CDs to support artistes? I'm not trying to discriminate against those who 'would if they could', but I'm surrounded by people who opt for only copying CDs from friends, downloading etc (and they are very well off, they change their belongings frequently). I suppose it's their freedom to do that, but once I wanted to buy a CD that my friend already had and she was like "There's no point! I have it too, I'll lend it to you."

Also, what's wrong with buying albums that were released quite a while ago? On two occasions I bought an album that was released a year back and two different people asked me, "Why did you buy that? It's so old!" I'm thinking well, better to buy 'old' good music than fresh crap. But I still want to know why people think that way.

Well, when I didn't have a job it was only burning and downloading for me. But now that I DO have a job, I'm making more of an effort to support my artists.

I found out that the Gackt MARS CD and a couple Dir en Grey CDs I have are bootleg so I'm working on replacing those when I have the chance.

Especially with some music... i.e.... I'm a HUGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEE Dir en Grey fan--- my favorite band. However, I haven't listened to their entire discography. And because I'm making an effort to be more supportive, I'm trying to buy their old CDs. So far I only have Withering to Death which was released during the time I started working. Next will be Vulgar ((the next CD back in time...)) etc.

Either way, if you're a SUPPORTIVE fan, you'll buy the product they sell. ((there are, of course, exceptions as to if you like it or not- stuff like that)) I'm not saying those who only DL their music aren't supportive- but they're not supportive to support that artist's livelihood. That's what those people do for a living. They sell their talent. I'm all for internet DLing and burning CDs- but if you really like them, you'll buy their music, too.

My CD collection (J-pop): 50+
My CD-r collection: 1
My mp3 collection: 0

I'm not so much for supporting the artist with one little purchase (That may not even count very much especially with OS purchases), I'm just stronger believer of owning the actual product as opposed to mp3s and CD-rs..

I believe in owning music I love so I can listen to them years and years down the track, and would try to cut down what I have to spend on other stuff (eg. eating out) just so I have an extra buck to spend on music.

I just don't trust mp3s and CD-Rs. They're so easily mis-placed. (Or wiped out by various and terrible computer mishaps.)

I buy plenty of old CDs, in fact most of what I've brought this year are records released well over a year ago. I think buying old CDs is pretty standard for most music lovers.

I'm trying to cut down the number of CDs I buy at the moment (most of them old), especially since after working. But I worry about things going out of print or out of stock, especially if the artist question isn't very well known and not that many copies were pressed. (Out of print thing doesn't seem to apply to English artists though)

I'm all for mp3s if it's strictly for evaluating purposes or if there's only one or two good tracks on an album.

I rely most on copying + downloading...I rarely buy a cd coz' I can't afford one......
but surely, If I'm rich I would buy em....coz' myself, don't really like downloading....it takes so much times with my slow connection...
but I did this only for some artists....
seriously but I couldn't found Koda CD & Mika CD in Indonesia....besides the bootlegs.....so really think that downloads are still helpful...

I try to buy CDs, mostly albums, whenever I can, but because I'm not working at the moment I might only be able to buy two albums in a year, but I do try to get cash or get someone to buy me an album as a present whenever I can. Ayu is the only artist I will get singles for. I think I might cut down on that a bit this year so I can buy more albums. I usually use mp3s as evaluation, and burn the ones I like onto CD until I can buy the actual CD.

Usually I try to buy albums and even singles of my favourite artists but I try to limit them to two or three artists because I do not work and they don't come cheap. If I really like a release I try to buy it since I feel it supports my favourite artist and also nothing beats having the actual copy.

I buy only original CDs these days and I gave away my older pirated ones to my friends. I get money through allowance and the lack of spending on anything other than CDs. So far...

The MINT stuff
JPOP: 20 CDs
English: 50 CDs

I don't normally buy J-Pop CDs because I don't have a credit card (I do, but they're evil.), but I hardly ever download English music. Normally, I just strut on over to Sanity and buy it. My sister and brother do all the MP3 downloading... -_-

I always buy CDs, I have MP3s just for convenience and evulation purposes. Bought about 80 CDs this year, not bad, not bad. Also got rid of a bunch, so the number of +/- 225 CDs in my collection has been pretty stable for a while.

Anyway, buying = good.

I download an album, then if I enjoy it a lot I'll buy it. If I don't enjoy it, I simply delete the mp3s. I don't have much money, but I'm trying to buy CDs as much as I can. I have around 50 genuine CDs and 3-4 CD-R that I'll give to my friends =)

I use mp3 for evaluation. If I like it I buy the CD eventually. I'm spending a lot more money than I should on CDs.

I download an album to see if the single is the only decent song on it. If the overall quality is good I buy the album, but keep the mp3s so I can burn my own 'best of' collections (like the best ballads by various female singers, for example). I try to buy all the albums of my half-dozen favourite artists - some have recorded good songs after I discovered them in the 00s and great songs in the early 90s when I didn't even realize they existed, so I definitely wouldn't keep from listening to an album because it's a few years old.

I don't have an allowance, or a job, so pretty much my CDs come as presents at my birthday and Christmas. I try to focus on one artist at a time (like last year I bought all of Ayu's albums for my birthday, and this year I ATTEMPTED Nanase Aikawa's...) unless there's an album that I REALLY want. Ayu is pretty much the only artist I buy singles from. I always download, yes, but mostly for evaluation purposes. If I know I'm going to get the album/single soon, I won't burn it, but if it'll be a while, I will so I can take the songs with me. (I don't have an iPod or anything like that)

Hopefully next year I'll get a job or something, and treat myself to a CD once in a while.

same

anyhow, as they dont come cheap, I still use the mp3's in order to keep my originals in mint condition... at least for my JPop CD's.

I get bored with music pretty fast and cycle through it so I tend not to buy CDs. I do buy CDs of artists I've been consistently listening to though. Madonna and Ayu CDs I'll most definitely buy and I try not to buy singles unless they're hard to come by. Basically, I'll buy something if it's rare or if I really like the artist.
