BOth yes and no. Composing can be done by anyone, it's not a "great" accompishment, it does not take training. So in many ways it's not "bad or good" at all. ALl it takes is creativity, and that's something that seems to be inborn more or less. Of course there are rules for structure etc, but most people who grew up listening to any pop music will have that ingrained anyways. So you are right, it may be difficult to compose even for some professional musicians, because it does not depend on your skill on some instrument (However, knowing how to play the piano a little helps a lot).

CREA made many of my favourite songs, and they were my favourites even before I knew that she made them. Same goes for DAI songs and CREA + DAI. I don't really know why, but it's a fact that a composer leaves a musical mark on his or in this case her works, repeating the same rythm, the same passages etc. WHat I like about DAI and CREA is the simplicity and catchiness. I also feel that her emotions are even stronger in the songs she wrote herself sometimes.

I do think that the arrangements often can grasp you and initially make you listen to a song, but the melody is what makes a classic. If ayumi's melodies werent' good, or easily got boring, her remix albums woulden'tve been as succeessful.

"I am..." and "RAINBOW" CREA was great. "My Story" CREA sucked. "winding road" was soooo amateurish, it sounded like an entirely different composer. And it was reflected in the music and arrangement, too. Not a whole lot could save that melody.

From I am... and RAINBOW:

I am..., UNITE!, evolution, Naturally, NEVER EVER, still alone, M, Endless sorrow, Heartplace, Dolls, and Close to you were all just CREA.

Daybreak, Dearest, no more words, Free & Easy, HANABI, July 1st, Voyage, and independent were CREA with D・A・I. (Daybreak also included junichi matsuda).

From MY STORY, CREA was only involved in the compositions of WONDERLAND (which isn't much to speak of, melodically), winding road, and Humming 7/4.

Does anyone know if Will is co-composed or if it is only by CREA?

I think she hasn't felt that she's needed to compose too much...

I mean, back when M was some HUGE HIT OF DEATH [the good kind]... I think avex pushed her to compose a lot~ which is why like, every single from then until & was CREA-penned. I think.. so she got sorta tired of doing it? :/

It does seem a bit weird how she started out composing.. it was cause none of the given compositions really stuck out to her~

Yeah, I remember reading that on masas page, she didn't like any of the compositions provided by the professionals so she decided to make her own ^^.

CREA is great, but TBH songs done by CREA aren't necessarily better than ones done by others.

Not neccessarily better, but we know that when she compose something she is giving us exactly what she wants to give us, and we know we get what she want to give us, makes it special, at least to me .

^^exactly.

I also think it's special because so many people don't compose their own stuff, or don't even write their own lyrics. One of the things that I love about Ayu's music is that it is so original, and when she composes something, even if it's just like an 8 measure little phrase, it makes it so special because it is from her, it makes it that much more personal. People were also commenting on how it is amazing that she does this with no musical experience, and I think it is pretty amazing. In fact, when I hear that artists compose their own music, I do have more respect for them, because, they are putting more of themselves into the actual song itself. It's one of the reasons why I have so much respect for Hikki, and Ayu is just right up there with her.

Ayu is no where near Hikkis level of involvement in how her music is produced, but I guess we got to be happy for what little we get .

^^yes I know, and Hikki is a bit different from Ayu in that respect. Ayu is more of a "product" like she has said, or an icon, while I think of Hikki as more of a musician first. She has never really been a fashion icon, or anywhere near the status of Ayu as a "product."

The fact that Ayu is seen this way doesn't make me love her any less, and the fact that Hikki isn't seen this way doesn't make me love her more, I just really respect her level of involvement in her music. Mostly, I think because, not only am I a musician myself, but like I said earlier, I'm used to artists not doing anything, just singing, and so when I see the dedication and personality that Ayu, and especially Hikki, puts in their music, it makes me really respect them a lot more, and the fact that their music is actually good...it's like an extra bonus.

I agree.

I love how you put this, it's something of the best I've ever read, it reminded me of what I use to say. I know that Ayu can never reach the same position as Hikki, Koda Kumi or any huge pop star, but at the same time, NO ONE can EVER come close to what Ayu is and what she has created, all artists are great in their own way and to me, Ayu is the greatest .
