What is Rock music?

yeah i do that when i'm looking for cds of artists people havent' heard of, just so they have an idea of the genre in the general sense

i see artists like britney or shakira as more pop-rock (if at all...)

i think "rock" is in most circumstances just a generalisation for all those various types of music/songs that have rock elements -- like the electric guitar. I usually specify an area (e.g. grunge rock, heavy metal, industrial) when labelling songs for my ipod rather than just saying "rock" -- because there's so many varieties!
