Hitomi Shimatani obviously. She's got a load of talent and few notice her. Her vocals are very pure and beautiful and she is a gorgeous person. I'm surprised that few people like her.

OLIVIA - I can see why she's not popular but she deserves more attention for her creativity.

MISIA chooses not to do any TV-shows and stuff like that to preserve her mysterious image. She's really not underrated at all, her arena tours are succesful & her album sales are still good even if she deosn't sell as much as she used to.

my choices for most underrated:

Bonnie Pink
she has such an extensive & long career eventho she doesn't have that many top10 hits. I think her biggest hit is reaching #2 on Oricon Singles chart with "A Perfect Sky"

hitomi
hitomi is my favorite j-pop artist with Ayu. hitomi has had several succesful albums & singles, but her latest two albums have really sold a little. which is a shame

She's really good and has an amazing voice too. Yet no one seems to like her that match. It's sad because O'kay, Magic, and Freak! are some of my favourite J-Pop songs. =[[

i only listened to her once, and that was to Freak! i liked her also in the collaboration single she did with rum from heartsdales, AI, and verbal. it was called "star struck ~return of the lovebytes~", i think.

I wonder how many people are aware of the fact how much they actually work, though. Some of them may not be the best singers, dancers or actors, but they work really hard. For example, KAT-TUN did 11 shows for their first concert! And Kamenashi (from KAT-TUN) once mentioned he had only 5 free days in a year!
hehe. Johnny's? i don't think they're under-rated, but i agree with everything you said. i think people hate them because they assume that their popularity comes from their looks. yeah, some of them can't sing that good, but they excel in other fields such as j-dorama (like Matsumoto Jun). they work so much and i have the most respect for them. (i love your Junno sig, btw! )

i think MONKEY MAJIK's pretty under-rated. they make great music, but it's a shame that they don't sell much. the same with Suga Shikao. i think people only know him for his lyrics that he wrote for SMAP (Yozora no Mukou) & KAT-TUN (Real Face). he has great music too. it's different and unique in the j-world. he has a unique voice as well.

Coaltar of the Deepers - A band I've been really into lately, but they seem to have an incredibly small fanbase online. They're really talented and have a great sound... and need more fans O_O

Kalimero - Okay, so they disbanded quite a while ago, but when they were around didn't seem to get much attention and they're one of my favourite bands

Suneo Hair - His music's just so enjoyable to listen to.

Miwa Sasagawa - I don't know about her popularity in Japan but, she seems to be another artist with a lack of fans online.

Misia
She is at #30 in the top sellers singers
She sells more than kuraki mai for example and almost the same than very popular singers like namie. And she doesn't even go to any TV shows!!
I agree that she is underrated, in terms of sales. But it's hard to sell well when you don't appear on TV.

Akeboshi - I think a lot of people will know him for Wind, but I don't see him mentioned a lot. His album is really good - but that genre of music prob isn't that popular.

Everyone is mentioning sifow, but at least here at AHS everybody knows about her, so at least here, she's in no way underrated. In Japan? well, that's another story.
