pertaining to Days performance, i do find her a little bit act cute for "ite iidesu" but when she continues with her "ka" i felt WOW everytime.. so i guess i am ok..
One of the most act cute performance i cant stand was Depend on You AT 2008 in Shanghai. i watched the video and was like "ayu.. u are 30". for Ladies Night AT 2006, i wun say that's act cute.. that's a mixture of naughty, sexy and wild.. got me all excited!! |

this is just my opinion, but i don't find it cute when a 30 year old woman acts cutesy. even if i do find ayu cute looking and some of her songs cute, the fact that she's 30 kinda creeps me. xO

I personally don't mind the way it was sung. I don't think it was as much as a cutesy voice as much as a "nasally voice", which I notice she tend to use in songs (apart from rock) that have higher pitch, so I always thought it wasn't really as much as being "cute" as using that technique to hit the right pitch live. And yeah, the nasally voice is often associated with the cutesy voice, but her cutesy songs tend to be higher pitched. I often feel like for her that's an easier way to sing higher pitched, especially for some of her earlier songs.
Granted, I think she does act cartoon-ish with that voice at times, but often I can feel like it's there on purpose, and she knows it is cartoonish, because for most interviews and the way she talks in tours and stuff it's regular, at least to the point where I don't really notice or can't recall specific details.

ayu is ayu.
she's cutesy. She's not going to change. She'd tell you straight out...if you don't like it, you don't have to. I think there are many sides to her. And I think she's lucky that she gets to show off so much of them in her songs.

That's one of the fascinating things about Ayu. She can go from talking like a 12 year old girl, to sexifying it up like some dominatrix to being all emotional and weepy at the drop of a hat. Not exactly the best at crying, but I'd say she's a pretty good actress. Unless you count all that stuff on account of her being a hot woman..

@ Kikaru - Yeah I know what you're talking about...but I really don't think she's using more resonance in those lines because the vocal technique is not that challenging compared to the few before with a secondary chord modulation and higher pitches, and she didn't sing like that there.
@ emiko and truehappiness - It is quite true that a person does have many sides to their personality and Ayu's songs do allow her to portray them...but at times I feel she does it too over the top that it seems to be not genuine anymore. Nevertheless I still love her as an artist...but I have noticed it does affect her appeal as a celebrity on a general level. |

I think it's actually supposed to be "warm" rather than "cute". The emotion she's trying to portray when singing "ite ii desuka"-- it's like the whole meaning of the song summed up into one sentence. "Can I stay loving you this much?" I find it very warm when she sings it like that, and see absolutely nothing wrong with it.

The line is suppose to be sung rather softly, and it seems like she has more control over her voice when she's using that technique. And yes, there are some instances where I get annoyed at her cutesy. But for me it's either I have a really bad memory because I haven't been able to recall the cutesy except for Depend on You in the tour, although I admit to being distracted by the pink afros... And TBH, even at the height of her popularity, a lot of people found her image fake. Although I am one of those people who think yes, she portrayed the diva image, but if she portrayed that girl-next-door it would just be as much as an image. Granted, I tend to take that reason with a grain of salt because from my experience in high school it tend to be the quickest way to explain how we don't like an artist/someone without really giving the reason. And with the entertainment world it is really hard to judge whether someone is "real" or "fake", and whether it's deliberately over the top or not. And at the heart of her career, she's an idol marketed to teenagers. And she has the job of maintaining the image of being young even if she get older because of her demography. Now, I wish that the marketing team would realize that if they really want her to maintain high popularity, they need to gear her toward an older audience that has the potential to identify more with her lyrics and such. And that would mean revamping her image.

More turned off than annoyed.
I think her vibrato can be the most painful about her vocals. How she's virtually jumping around in different notes when she's supposed to maintain one.

I feel the same as haikudasai about the vibrato. It sounds like she's going between two different notes, rather than one note with a vibration. But ya know, David Bowie did that two-note type of vibrato too and I freaking love David Bowie, so.
Shows how much of a crap I give about that in the big picture, you know? And yeah, i REALLY don't like ayu doing the cutesy thing anymore... it's exhausting now. It was cute up until she hit... I'd say when she was 25, it started to get old and she needed to put an end to it. At least she doesn't do it all the time, thank goodness x_X

It's not like she's always running around in cute attire, talking in a cute voice and such. I don't see how "acting your age" means you can't be childish every once in a while. Ayu seems like a fun loving person, I'd rather her be cute than looking like she has a stick up her butt all the time and like she doesn't enjoy her work. Ayu is just being Ayu
![]() But I think the way she sings the end of Days live is annoying for other reasons. Control that vibrato girl >_<; |
