What do you look for in a good singer?

So, when you're listening to a SINGER, what usually attracts you to them?

(I'm not talking about artists here, so options like, they hold good concerts, they write their own lyrics, they're creative, etc aren't vaild reasons.)

I'm talking about when you hear someone on the radio, whether it's someone you know or don't know, like or dislike, what makes you say, "He/She's a good singer!"?

Is it the clarity in their voice?

Is it their fat range?

Is it their technique?

Vote and explain if you'd like.

(Crap, I forgot the option for "Timbre" )

EMOTION. . .i could care less if they have an imperfect voice. i want emotion. singers with beautiful voices with no emotion are almost unbearable to listen to. nothing comes across.

I think all those things, and a few more, are important in their own ways, and that all singers should strive to be as perfect as possible in all those aspects, because all of them can turn you into a better singer. But the only ones I think you NEED are a decent range and the ability to control your pitch. Because without range, you are guaranteed to sound monotone, and usually strained and generally unprofessional. And if you're always off pitch....well, that's obviously very bad, lol. Also, I think all singers should have general control. It doesn't have to be focused in the vibrato or anything, but rather, you need to make sure all your notes are as crisp as possible and everything. This makes the difference between sounding polished or sounding like an amateur.

But another thing that I think you need, if you want to be considered an amazing singer, is the natural voice... It's hard to explain, but... Well, there's a reason that some people just don't seem that awesome at singing. I mean, she can have a three and a half octave range, beautiful vibrato, unbelievable control.......but her voice is...ugly. I guess it's a mixture between things like timbre, clarity, tone, and then generally how your voice sounds.... Some people just have beautiful, clear voices, and this adds SO much to what people think of your singing!

And one more thing, as the others have mentioned, putting your heart and soul into your singing is a real key. You could technically be singing 'perfect', but if you don't care and aren't actually feeling what you're singing, you won't sound your best, and you probably won't make a real connection with your audience, which is something that is very important for any performer or artist. And if you have this emotion and connection, you don't even have to be a great singer, honestly. You'll still draw quite a few people in. Just make sure you don't overdo the emotion, eh heh..... This is basically over-singing, and it can be incredibly annoying. >_<

I look for first of all, like everyone said, emotions and feeling It's amazing to listen to people who sing and they really connect with the song <3

I also love it when I hear songs with lots of range in their pitch and such~ It's so cool!

I love singers with nice vibratos! They're just so nice to listen to!
I like nice range, clarity, a good head and chest voice and of course for them to stay on key XD

Like a lot of people, I can't really think of anything other than emotion.

For example, Bjork and Karen-O have a very quirky, imperfect voices, but they're amazingly emotional and I love them both for that.

On the other hand, singers like Christina Aguilera and Leona Lewis who have very good voices technically, often sound insincere and fake when they sing, so I don't like them at all.

a good singer is not just about vocals... is about a lot more.

-If they are able to connect with an audience.
-If they are able to express their feelings with their music.

A beautiful voice still very essential too!

Interesting responses, guys! Keep 'em comin'!

(I just wanted to see what everyone generally likes; don't think it was made for me personally and I'm gonna use you guys to build my future singing career. I wanted to make this poll to see what anybody looks for in any singer. Total curiosity )

I don't know why I didn't think about emotion! That is a big part in the role of a singer.

Clarity, stays on pitch and key, a nice straight tone, and EMOTION(as strawberisnowayumi has posted). I can't stand listening to an artist that sings without emotion. It just...doesn't sound good at all.

The most important thing I look into an artist is emotion, after all music is art and art is expressing your emotions. They don't have only to know what they sing, they have to feel it, to amaze the audience with what s/he's singin'.
I usually don't care that much for the voice, like untitledforayu said, you can have an "imperfect" voice and still deliver a wonderful message trough the song (Ayu and Miho Hatori are the first examples that come to my mind).

Also, to stay in pitch, the clarity and the range are pluses.
