Pop star Britney Spears has reportedly married her childhood sweetheart in a quiet Las Vegas ceremony.

The 22-year-old diva married Jason Allen Alexander at the Little White Wedding Chapel on the Strip, according to US website People.com.

The bride wore jeans and baseball cap and a hotel bellman walked her down the aisle.

However, a source close to the star said the whole thing was a joke that went too far and the star is already seeking an annulment.

People.com said that Spears and Alexander, also 22, travelled to the wedding chapel after partying at Ghostbar, a club in the Palms Casino Hotel.

The chapel staff told the couple they could not get married without a licence, so they were taken by limo to the Las Vegas courthouse.

They were granted the licence and wed back at the chapel.

Little is known about Alexander. A source says that he and Spears were childhood friends who recently hooked up and had spent New Year's Eve together.

Spears fourth album "In the Zone" debuted at the top of the album charts in November. She begins a concert tour on March 2 in San Diego.

what the hell, was she drunk??

I read in a newspaper today that she celebrated the New Years in Las Vegas at the Palms hotel and partied at the Ghostbar (and got drunk). (And was carried out by her bodyguards because she was so drunk but I don't know if that's true).

This news is so weird...

A hotel bellman walked her down the aisle. But before you make any plans to send wedding gifts, a source close to the pop star insists it was all a joke that went too far, and that Spears is already making plans to annul the marriage.

Says someone close to Spears: "I don't know what's going through her mind."

Spears's husband -- at least for the time being -- is named Jason Allen Alexander, and, like the singer, is from Kentwood, La. The two tied the knot early Saturday morning in Las Vegas at the Little White Wedding Chapel on the Strip, sources tell PEOPLE.

The wedding plan was apparently hatched Friday night while Spears and Alexander were partying at Ghostbar, the hip club in the Palms Casino Hotel. The club's bouncers got word that Spears wanted a limo. One of the hotel's lime-green limos was provided, being driven by a hotel bellman, who shuttled the couple to the Little White Wedding Chapel, a famous quick-hitch place where everybody from Dixie Chick Natalie Maines to Bruce and Demi have tied the knot.

Chapel staff told the couple that they couldn't get married without a license, so the pair was taken by the limo to the Clark County Marriage Bureau office in the downtown Las Vegas courthouse at some point after 12:30 a.m. on Saturday. They applied for and were granted the marriage license, then rode back to the chapel, where they were married.

Spears wore jeans and a baseball cap. Alexander had on a casual shirt. The bellman walked Spears down the aisle. There were no friends or family in attendance.

The whole thing was videotaped by the chapel, and Spears has been showing the world's craziest wedding video to friends.

"I don't even know if she loves him," says a source.

The honeymoon, such as it was, took place back at a luxury suite at the Palms immediately after the wedding. Then, Saturday night, Spears dined with her manager, her brother, Palms owner George Maloof and a couple of friends at a hotel steakhouse.

Little is known about Alexander. A source says that he and Spears were childhood friends who recently hooked up -- then hitched up. They had spent New Year's Eve together at the hotel's Rain nightclub, then retired to the suite.

Spears released her fourth album, "In the Zone," last November. It debuted at No. 1 on the album charts. Her concert tour begins in San Diego on March 2.

A marriage license was filed in Clark County, Nevada, on Jan. 3, for Jason Allen Alexander and Britney Jean Spears, both 22. Signed by both, the document says they are both residents of Kentwood, Louisiana, who were born in Mississippi.

Neither has been married before.

The wedding was only the latest lurch toward adulthood by the pop princess, a one-time children's television performer turned teen-aged sex symbol who most recently has posed scantily clad on magazine covers and kissed Madonna (news - web sites) on national television while promoting her latest album.

Spears married Alexander at the Little White Wedding Chapel on the Las Vegas strip early on Saturday, according to online reports by the Las Vegas Review Journal newspaper and People magazine.

The pop diva's most high-profile romance previously was with fellow pin-up Justin Timberlake, now enjoying a successful solo career after years with the boy band 'N Sync (news - web sites).

Spears admitted last year she had sex with Timberlake, despite famously vowing to remain a virgin until she wed.

Both publications said Spears was walked down the aisle by a Palms Hotel bellman.

Although confirming details of the marriage license, Reuters could not immediately reach Spears' representatives for comment. Representatives for the Little White Wedding Chapel and the Palms Hotel declined comment.

People reported that the Grammy-nominated Spears wore jeans and a baseball cap for the ceremony.

Spears shot to superstardom as a teen-ager with her debut album "...Baby One More Time." She released her latest, "In the Zone," in November, storming to number one on the music charts with the aide of a publicity blitzkrieg.

It was the singer's fourth consecutive No. 1 debut, but the album's first-week sales of 609,000 units fell short of her previous efforts, continuing her downward sales trajectory in recent years.

But an unnamed source close to singer told the Web site that the wedding was a joke that went too far and Spears is planning an annulment.

From what I've read, it's a childhood friend, but I'm just wondering why she got married "out of nowhere", so to speak. I mean... she didn't do anything fancy, got a limo, went to a place with none of their relatives, and got married. It makes me wonder... how long will this "quick" marriage last?

George Maloof Jr., owner and operator of the Palms Casino Hotel, confirmed that the 22-year-old Spears married Jason Allen Alexander of Kentwood, La., about 5:30 a.m. Saturday at a Las Vegas wedding chapel.

"Nobody knew it was coming," said Maloof, Spears' good friend. The two arranged an annulment Saturday afternoon in the presence of several people, including a Las Vegas lawyer, said a source close to Spears who spoke on condition of anonymity. The signed annulment will be filed when the courts open Monday morning, the source said.

Calls to Spears' representatives were not immediately returned.

Spears and Alexander journeyed by limousine to the Little White Wedding Chapel on the Strip after a stop at the Ghostbar, a club in the Palms Casino Hotel. "I was with her the whole night," he said. "None of those reports were accurate. She was just having a good time."

Spears was still staying at the Palms and was expected to leave Sunday. Employees at the chapel declined comment.

Alexander was back in his hometown Sunday, according to his grandfather, Robert Alexander.

"He'd been through a lot. We picked him up in New Orleans coming back and he didn't have much to say," the elder Alexander told Entertainment Tonight.

"I wish them well," he said. "Whatever happens, happens."

He said Spears and Alexander had also spent Christmas Eve together.

Calls to Alexander's family home in Kentwood, La. were answered by a machine. His grandmother said any details about the wedding would have to come from Jason or his father.

"We know about the wedding and stuff. It's all over the news," Betty Alexander said.
