Cool Karaoke Discussion Thread

If you know me, you'd know that I really really LOVE karaoke....I was actually introduced to karaoke around 2-3 years ago. I'm lucky enough to attend a university in a pretty heavily populated diverse area...so there are a ton of Asians here, which means, lots of Asian-style karaoke places. Although the places are all a little expensive ($25 for one hour of singing o_O), I really like going with a large group of friends....or even with just one other friend is fun, hehe.

At karaoke I usually sing Japanese since the karaoke places have a lot of Japanese songs in their books ^^ I used to only memorise the romaji to certain songs and tried my luck out with memorising..but nowadays, since I can read more kanji and such, I can karaoke almost any song that I am familiar with.

Actually, this past Wednesday, I went karaoke with my friend Bradley...we sang for 2 hours!! We both sang a lot of J-pop, although I threw in a few random American songs in there, like Marilyn Manson ...

So tell me, do YOU like karaoke? What kind of karaoke have you done? What songs do you sing usually? Any funny karaoke experiences?

Well, this area (Northern Virginia) is supposedly a very expensive place in the US....little dinky apartments go for $1000 a month o_O;; So you can imagine how much houses cost around here...people around here just have a higher standard of living so that's probably why the karaoke is so expensive. That, or the Koreans (who own most of the Asian karaoke places) like to suck money out of us. o_O;;

I can't wait until I get to Japan and get to sing for less than 1000 yen!

I don't have any karaoke places around here, and i don't have anyone to go with either >_< (My friends could care less).
So usually, i'm stuck at home singing by myself. It's a good way to improve too.
Apartments around here cost about the same too.

^ You live in NJ! Not toooo far from Northern Virginia Haha, we should organise an AHS meet-up on the East Coast to sing karaoke! That'd be so cool I think.

Well, I have a story to tell!

Last summer when I was a homestay student in Japan, on one of the last days I was there, my host-sister (her name was Yurino) had a going away party with a bunch of her friends since she was going to spend a year in Finland. So after the party, she said she had to go do something, but told her friends (there was like...10 of them?!) to take me to karaoke! That was something I'd wanted to do since I got there! Well, getting there was an adventure in itself. I had to ride behind a girl wearing her uniform on her bicycle (her name was Takako) and my shoe got caught in the spokes! We were a bit behind everyone else after that.

So we finally got to the place, and I was so happy because it was air-conditioned! We got in our little room and sat down...the girls handed me an English song book. But I told them to give me the handheld for the Japanese songs. After they sung a song I decided to sing one...I busted out STEP you.

Them: *whisperwhisper*STEPYOU?!*whisperwhisper*

Afterwards they were like "SHE SINGS JAPANESE!!"

Then of course they were under the impression that I was fluent, but I told them I was going off memory and the hiragana on the screen.

I sung a lot Ayu songs...like No way to say, and others. I don't remember because I sang a lot. =\ I also sung Kiseki no Umi by Maaya Sakamoto...afterwards Takako said to me "YOUR BEST SONG!" Yeah I thought so too!

Eventually Yurino arrived with two of her other friends, and we sang Ray of Light together, since we both love Madonna. They also started singing Moonlight Densetsu from Sailor Moon, so I sung the English version which they thought was funny.

Lol, I could talk about karaoke forever...

^ xDDD. You're lucky.

Ooh fun times, Calico, fun times. XD Ya, when I first sang Japanese songs my friends were like "Wow you sing so well!" But then my cover would be blown once I came across hiragana/kanji I didn't know how to read (this was two years ago). Now I just have a bit of trouble with kanji...but other than that, I can sing most any Japanese song if I'm familiar with the tune

Have you ever noticed how a lot of Japanese songs have the same kind of phrases in them? ^^; Makes it easier to sing them once you figure out which phrases are used in them more, haha.

We should all go and do internet karaoke..although it isn't quite as fun as the real thing. Hehe.

I think my throat still hurts a bit from singing Marilyn Manson's "This is the new *****" ^^;; That was the only English song I sang all night last Thursday ^^; Hehe.

I love internet karaoking!! Except that sometimes, the quality sucks.
Here are two sites with streaming (though they don't have that many songs):
www.karaokebox.org
http://karaoke.windain.net/high.html

www.animekaraokes.com has many karaokes to download.

Does anyone else know any other sites?
