Rock or metal?

I listen(ed) a lot to Gack, here's a few, some are very mainstream, artists I enjoy a lot (bold ones I like more/listen to the majority of their songs):
Metal/Heavy:
Sonata Arctica - from Finland but sing in English
Metallica
Nightwish - from Finland but sing in English
Iron Maiden
Rammstein - from Germany and sing in German
Marilyn Manson
The Devin Townsend Band
Deep Purple

Rock:
Van Halen
Twisted Sister
Sisters of Mercy
Scissor Sisters
Queens of the Stoneage
Pixies
Nirvana
Guns N Roses
Electric Light Orchestra (dunno if this really can be called rock)

Metal/rock/something~
System of a Down (I like a few of their songs)

Punk:
Sum41
The Offspring
Blink 182

I don't know if many of those bands are very similar to the music you like, but if you like one of them I could probably narrow it down a bit and maybe tip you about more bands.

immel! another Rammstein and Nightwish fan! yay!

spacelion, if you like Nightwish, I can recommend (italics are the best)
Lacuna Coil
Within Temptation
Leaves Eyes
Theatre of Tragedy
Evanescence
After Forever
L'ame Immortelle
they hall have female vocals (*sighs* so beautiful)

If you Like Rammstein i can recommend these similar German industrial bands/artists:
Eisbrecher
Megaherz
OOMPH!

Other industrial artists:
Rob Zombie - this guy kicks ass!
Marilyn Manson

as for other rock styles, I can recommend
Hoobastank (they're a bit more mainstream)
Breaking Benjamin (mainstream-ish too)
Nickelback
Zeromancer
The 69 Eyes (described as "Goth'n'Roll" -- think a goth Elvis voice)
H.I.M.
Linkin Park (they got me hooked on rock music)
Disturbed (if you love that deep manly voice like in Eisbrecher and Rammstein)
KoRn
Limp Bizkit (Choclate Starfish and backwards -- not the recent stuff!)

oh! one of the best rock soundtracks out there is the Queen of the Damned soundtrack - it has a variety of styles

if any of those artists sound interesting/you wanna hear some of their stuff, let me know and I can give you some recommendations

My only suggestion is 1) Nanase Aikawa. She sings in Japanese but can handle english. It's terribly sad she's so neglected in the English/American community. She's not really like Miyavi-type. Actually, she's a bit like Ayu with more real-life situations put into her songs.
You can click the "nostalgia" link in my signature to watch one of my favorite videos.
I'd also say B) Pat Benatar, which Jimmy suggested to me. She's pretty awesome. She's from America, but it's likely some may have not heard of her, for she sang in the 80's era.
Tell me if you try either of them.

^ Is that Brittany Brower from ANTM in your avatar?

Ok, I'm no expert. Don't laugh.

Ashlee Simpson
No, she does not suck no matter whatever some events might indicate. Her songs are very catchy and addictive despite sounding noisy ocassionally. I recommend her second album, I Am Me. It's full of good stuff, plus the future single, Invisible, from the re-released version is just as good.

The Cardigans
This folk/rock thing they have is really awesome too. The vocalist has one of the most interesting voices I have ever heard. It's dreamy and soft and mellow, like a feather cushion. Their songs are really good but not released in the US, except their biggest hit to date, Lovefool. If you want, I can upload a song or two for you.

Garbage
Yep, they're great. Their last studio album is pure addictive rock music that's catchy enough for the masses. I can recommend a few tracks if you want, but you might have already heard their songs. A few of their singles are pretty mainstream and received airplay. They sang the theme of a 007 movie, The World Is Not Enough.

Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The Clash
Ramones
Sex Pistols

Not sure if these are considered rock...Maybe they are just...bands who sing with no particular genre in mind.

Ben Folds Five
Muse
Cranberries
Depeche Mode
Snake River Conspiracy
Orgy

I've really gotten into Mew lately, a Danish band, they have some really good songs! Check out Snow Brigde or Zookeepers boy... A little lighter than Limp Bikzkit style, but they are pretty cool

oh yeah, you asked the right person...hehe

anyways...

Metallica
Audioslave
Disturbed
Seether
Trapt
Shinedown
Godsmack
Nine Inch Nails
Dark New Day
Soundgarden
Nirvana
Alice in Chains
Three Days Grace
Korn
Mudvayne
Linkin Park
Rage Against the Machine
Crossfade
Switchpin
Hurt
Staind

Well these are my favorite bands I can name at the moment. They're hardcore bands but their not all that scream metal stuff and yes, they are all American. I think all American pop sucks, and Americans have it when it comes to hard rock.
