Unwanted thread title changing...

Quoted from the "Quitting Smoking" thread.

I noticed that someone, or more than one person, has started doing that a lot, it's happened to a large amount of my threads, too. Mainly in the downloads board and I haven't really minded.

I thought staff members were supposed to respect the authors and were actually quite not allowed to edit threads or posts without the original posters agreement, unless it's actually rule breaking.

That's not true. We CAN change the thread titles for clarity and rule infringement as well. If you have any questions you can PM a staff member as to why a specific thread title has been changed or edited.

Thank you for answering, I was not trying to state something I was more asking if staff could actually do this because I vaguely remembered something in the AHS rules, I looked the part up now,

I can see this rule more applies to actual posts and not thread titles.

Staff members does have the power to edit thread titles and posts, but I never interpreted that as one of their responsibilities. I also thought that it would be better if the staff contacted the author before changing the title, or when he/she changes the title, instead of waiting for the author to contact a staff member about it when the change has already been made.

I don't mind the thread title changing, I'm just very inquisitive .

6. Write descriptive topic titles.
Everyone should be able to know what a thread is about just by looking at the title.

I changed the thread title because it was very misleading to a lot of people. Simply saying "Quitting" made many people think Terri was quitting AHS. It was very vague and needed clarification.

I think we all did, it sure was a title that pulled attention to the thread. Which was the authors purpose I suspect.

Thanks for the heads up, nmskalmn.

@Mad_Cactuar - it's not actual rules, it's guidelines. If those were rules I would have been banned half a year ago. Take a look at them.

Okay, I retract this post.

I no longer care.

The title changing went out of hand and some was very unnecessary.

Just my views, I know it won't change anything.

That rule is important in my views. Threads like "Is it me or...", "Anyone going to..." and "OMG! Look at this!" are very annoying. There was a thread asking about Hyolee in the music section. The title didn't reflected that at all. I clearly remember that the "Quitting smoking" title wasn't that and it didn't even mention the word "smoking"...

they could at least ask before changing them even if it is annoying!!!!!!!!! which rule is real??? making good thread titles or not changing thread titles! of course the staff 1 the 1 about changing thread titles should be REMOVED.

People should ask the staff before making confusing, non-informing, or bad thread titles as well.
And of course, changing thread titles is important. Some threads get old and need to have their titles editted. Some people make confusing titles and those need to be editted. People make such a storm over something so innoffensive The staff doesn't change these titles because they want to show authorithy, it's actually for the sake of other regular initiates, they also get confused/offended/irritated by the lack of a good descriptive thread title. When I used to be a regular initiate I used to hate misleading titles such as "look at this!!", "OMG!!! I can't believe it!"....

there are no storms!!!!! i just say that maybe you should ask before you do that....... maybe someone will report it as being misleading instead of just changed? then the thread creator wont be as angry..........

I agree. We're not selling anything, so I don't see why you need to attract people with pointless thread titles... I'm sure one of the regulars will post in your thread, even if it doesn't have a 'catchy' title.

Well, titles sometimes are even much more important than the "person who created the thread's first post". There was a time someone made a thread and most initiates misinterpretted the title AND didn't read the main post (LOL that's become quite a routine here, it's far more usual than we can imagine). People started writing the wrong replies for the thread (by wrong, I mean, totally unrelated replies to the user's main post). I pmed the user and they accepted to have the title changed. We do pm members often, though it's not guarantee we'll always do it. It's not a big deal as explained countless times already.

Well that was mature!

I think it's been said before, but Moderators have a right to change the title if it breaches any rules or is annoying, and pointless to the post which was made. Anyway ImpactBreaker stated that they try to PM the user, but it isn't a big deal anyway. It's just a thread title x.x

Is it really that hard to make a title that's relevant to the thread? If you don't like thread titles being changed, then take it as a lesson learned that the titles should reflect what the thread is actually about. You can save your energy for worrying about something more important
