Interpretation of Duty lyrics?
Hihi everyone..I've been wondering the interpretation of Duty lyrics for some time. For instance, what is the 'it' it is refering to?? I do not understand it literally
. Anyone cares to explain your interpretation of the lyrics?? Thanks!! Or did Ayu mention how her lyrics for this song came about? I love this song very much and I hope to understand it!! Anyway below is the lyrics. (credits to http://ayumi.primenova.com/lyrics/duty.htm) Everyone is convinced that that "thing" they're searching for is in the future. But how many people have realized that "it" is actually in the past? I can't even guess. I saw the end of an era with my own eyes. But I didn't want to know that it's my turn next. If, after simplifying it a bit more, you think that "it" merely connects and arranges memories, then wouldn't everyone already have "it?" I want you to realize that. I saw the end of an era with my own eyes. And in truth, I actually do know that it's my turn next. You'll find me, won't you? I'm betting that you'll find me. I saw the end of an era with my own eyes. But I didn't want to know that it's my turn next.

okay, from the lyrics
Everyone is convinced that that "thing" they're searching for is in the future. It's saying that many of us waiting for happier and success future But how many people have realized that "it" is actually in the past? I can't even guess. but also many of us understood that there would be no miracle in the future, because we missed it in the past or missing in present I saw the end of an era with my own eyes. But I didn't want to know that it's my turn next. I think that in chorus she's saying that realized other people hopes(for happier future) but she also hopes for that one or you may understand it literally like all people degrade, and she doesn't want to know that society would make her degrade too other idea - she sees broken hopes of people, but it's scaring for her to realize that she also missed what she is looking for in the past If, after simplifying it a bit more, you think that "it" merely connects and arranges memories, then wouldn't everyone already have "it?" I want you to realize that. If you would stop and think what are you looking for, and what for you live through today you would realize that you already have this thing, and you're livin with this already, but you won't mention it until you lose it I saw the end of an era with my own eyes. And in truth, I actually do know that it's my turn next. she is saying that thing she doesn't have more understanding that other people does, and she is also even realizing that all she may need already present but anyway waiting for something in the future You'll find me, won't you? I'm betting that you'll find me. She is saying that thing(man) she is waiting for in the future, and she hopes in the future they will be together Sorry if i'm wrong, choruses confused me, but i'm sure for verses)) Last edited by Ayumi_lover; 14th December 2008 at 10:14 AM. |

I've always thought that it is talking about being happy and people always keep going forward to find some kind of perfect happiness when really they have already had that time so should be sort of grateful for having had it? I think this song if one of her really good lyrics that makes you look at things differently. Ayu is so insightful sometimes!

I think the "it" isnt happiness, but the possibility to have peace all over the world like: we missed peace and now, for a long time, peace wont be possible in our world, at least thats what i thought of when i saw the concert in which she had all her dancers and orchestra costumed as german soldiers and the "duty" is the duty of noticing, that we dont have peace and we wont have it in the earlier future

The "it" is different for everyone who listens to the song, and judging from ayu's use of the word "kore" rather than anything specific, I think that it was done on purpose. If you're dissatisfied about ANYTHING in your life, the world, whatever... you tend to look to the past to find out what went wrong. Ayu is presenting the possibility that what we want can't be found by regretting things and wishing for things to have turned out differently. She seems to be saying that either it lies somewhere in the future and we should work toward it, or there's nothing really wrong to begin with; we're just so caught up in things that we don't realize it.

oh thanks everyone for your interpretations!! Now, I quite understand the verses, but am still confused about the chorus. Nevertheless, I really appreciate Ayu's lyrics, it's so thought provoking!

The "end of an era" simultaneously refers to the switchover to the new millennium AND the end the time in Ayu's life when she dwelled upon her past rather than looking towards the future. This is what I'm reading into it anyway, and anyone interpreting lyrics is going to bring their own life story into it a little.
