LOL Thanks, I'm actually printing my mom some lyric translations, cause her biggest complaint is that she doesn't know what Ayu is saying. I want her to see how Ayu's lyrics inspire her fans and why I think she's the best ^-^b Next time I see my mom, we're watching her (miss)understood arena tour together, she LOVED CDL 2007-2008.

I don't consider her voice strong. A strong voice to me is like ayaka (
 ) or Christina Aguilera. Ayumi's voice is rather high pitched or low (plus weak when she's performing live), not necessarily strong since she can't hit strong/high notes. She always messes her high note in B&D so I'm rather surprised that your mom loved Ayu after seeing a B&D performance.

I think Ayu wasn't born with a strong voice (evidenced through her earliest songs when it was squealy and urgh) but she definately IS a strong vocalist now.
She has developed it over the years and I can confidently say that Ayu not only has a powerful voice, but an emotional and passionate one too. The greatness of her vocals are best seen in ballads. Particularly the recent ones. Her rock songs show it off well too. Like the OP (jbrat2219), my mum has been getting into her concerts lately too and she also remarked at the duality of sweetness and power in Ayu's voice. She even said it reminded her of this one Chinese singer (don't remember the name) who's one of her favourites, which is a HUGE compliment! Also, mum can't get over beautiful Ayu is lol. She keeps talking about how she's a rare beauty and so on hahaha. Anyway, I do think in her earlier concerts, her vocals could be rather weak and offtune even. But I think starting around 2002-3 ish, I became deeply impressed with her live performances. Her Asia Tour 2007 is a prime example of how good her vocals can be. Back in the early days, Ayu had her moments of great singing (like M and Connected amongst others) but she didn't refine her voice yet. I think the magic began with the making of her Rainbow album. I wouldn't say Ayu is the best singer, but she's certainly a fine one. And I don't see her as simply a vocalist, but a real artist. It's the entire package. Also, I think there's a difference between a powerful voice and a voice with alot of range. Ayumi is more power. I also showed mum a variety of other singers but she wasn't really impressed by Namie. She said yes, she sings and dances but she has no energy in her movements. She's so 'dead'; as if she doesn't enjoy her own performances and concentrates too much on trying to get all the moves 'perfect'. She also said her vocals are strained and something about being too skinny... when I showed her Jolin Tsai, she literally laughed. No joke...I think it was all the acrobatic stuff.. I think Ayumi has an exceptional voice. It may not be the strongest of the bunch, but it is strong. I've always believed that, but I was surprised how quickly my mother believed it. Even my friend, who originally could not stand her squeeky voice, agrees that her voice now is much stronger than it was, and even went as far as to take a slight interest in her (asked me for some of her songs xD; ). Even my youngest brother is now a fan of Ayu and has her music on his myspace xD; Since a lot of people don't know her around here where I live, I was shocked how quickly her voice can caputre their attention, make them want to listen and hear more; even if they don't understand the words. That to me is what makes her voice so strong

Ayu has strong voice sometimes and sometimes doesn't. She can control her voice to make it softer and stronger, so i like that. She doesn't have the range like Aguilera and other people we usually think of when we hear the word strong. But she can sing nice and loud and with power when she wants to.

Yes she does...see kiss o' kill's front portion...i never saw that coming before...it was very powerful and strong...
but she doesn't show it often, especially in her cd tracks... and sometimes in live, her voice may get too deep which isnt really nice... but yea, she DOES have a strong voice
