you shouldn't move your mouth during vibrato, it is incorrect singing. Sorry to break it to you guys, but Ayu sings from her throat, not her stomach. So she has to compensate and make fake vibrato at times. The fact that she has been smoking and drinking since she turned 20 doesn't help, because I remember she didn't used to do it.

Really?? I also thought that I sing from my stomach because I feel it's moving but later my throats started to ache..

Well, your vocal chords are like any other muscle, you have to work them out.

Ayu does not sing properly, and that includes her vibrato. Her shorter & less emphasized vibratos from the "I am..." era and earlier were done properly, with her vocal chords... my guess is she went to a new vocal coach afterwards who taught her as though she were an opera singer, telling her to use her mouth. Opera singers sometimes use their mouths to emphasize their vibrato as a sort of supplement to their vocal chords' movements - it makes it easier to project the vibrato so everyone can hear it.

It's COMPLETELY unnecessary and improper for a pop musician to be doing it, and it over-emphasizes the vibrato to the point where you don't know which of the two distinct notes she's actually trying to hit. Vibrato shouldn't create two notes, it should be one note, with a slight vibration.

I think it sounds awful, and it turned me off to alot of tracks in 2002 and 2003 when she started doing it. I've gotten used to it over the years but sometimes (especially in lives) the sound & look of it still REALLY bothers me.

I like that lol It has a different feeling when she sings like that.. I don't actually care about that much. I guess it's her habbit, just like when she sings ballads she waves her hand all over - that's funny Maybe she does that to concentrate better? And the mouth thing too..I really wouldn't know :/

I love her vibrato. The vibrato makes her so unique. I wish I can sound like her voice =)

You can press the sides of your throat under your chin with your fingers just hard enough for you to feel the muscles underneath moving and try singing. You will find singing high notes easier and the sound comes out stronger. That's cos it's preventing throat usage. Your stomach might actually ache a little if you do it for a few minutes (that's a good thing). But singers can't do that cos it will look stupid.

She's trying to hard to force the vibrato out IMO. I prefer her gentle vibratos in the past, now it's getting kinda unnecessary and unpleasant sounding. Guess she needs to find her comfortable place.

I'm sure Ayu just does it out of habit and because it adds a dramatic effect to the song. I don't mind when she moves her mouth during vibrato, I tend to do it too sometimes.

The vibrato sometimes bothers me, when it gets a little out of hand (like evolution opening CDL 06-07) but about her singing correctly? Out of all singers there, I don't think she gives a crap about whether she sings according to traditional vocal rules or not, she just does whatever she pleases. She still sells CDs and concert tickets anyway.

If it was damaging her career, they'd train her to stop.

I never minded her vibrato to be honest. I didn't even pay much attention as something unusual until I started seeing people complaining so much abnout it. But then, I always loved original kanariya in which people say she goes so high and ear piercing, but it always felt normal to me

Thank you so much for your post. I agree with you too. Don't even care about her vibrato, I like what she does. But one of my friends sometimes jokes about it and starts singing every word in vibrato, always puts a huge grin on my face!

as we all should know, we use our vocal folds when we sing/talk, stretching and/or expanding for certain sounds and such. when you do vibrato, the vocal folds in your larynx are controlled by muscle which stretch onto the (in lamest terms) jaw of your mouth, so it would cause a reverberating motion to the muscle that surrounds your mouth, causing it to involuntarily move, which physiologically occurs to help produce the vibrato sounds, especially with the vibratos that Ayu uses, which are heavy, it'd very much create [dramatic] mouth movements.

I tried it and it did work with me... Thanks a lot!! Now all I have to do is practice it!!

I don't think ayu can go back to that old vibrato style...IMO as we age, our vocals changed also right?
