I don't even take World Music Awards seriously, they're so unprofessional,
I still remember of the whole fiasco where they stole A WORLD IS ONE banner. Supposedly the awards happened last year and I didn't even see anything about online. Quote:

^ She wasn't actually compared to Madonna; her album allegedly leaking early was. Though I agree, if you are gonna compare a Jpop singer to Madonna use Ayu, the arc of her career and some of the imagery is way closer.

American news always compare ANY asian artist with Britney Spears and/or Madonna. I saw that not only with Namie, but also with Utada, Koda and Ayumi. They should stop doing that lol

Yeah, comparisons are terrible. I understand they are trying to stress the calibre of the artist, but you can say "mega pop star" or something to that effect. Any comparison to Britney Spears is just sad, she can't really sing and she doesn't even really dance anymore. She is not near the fitness level of Namie.

I also find these comparisons terrible, but I don't judge people anymore, it's easier for them to associate how big one artist is in their country, if their career is more about image, singing, dancing, or even being controversial or not... If they grow interested of the artist they will eventually grow out of this comparison
I saw an article once comparing Kuu to Xtina, and if you take it deep it's dumb cause Xtina came out of a TV program and started very young and popular, while Kuu came from auditions and gained success later... But the comparison, I guess, is towards the changes on pop, sexy and romantic styles/images that other singers don't usually do. Hot Stuff and Dirrty are pretty comparable imo, so are show girl and Ain't No Other Man and so on...

I remember back in the day Utada was compared to Britney, and all I could say was "wut". The only comparison that makes sense to me is Kuu and Christina.
I think it's silly to compare artists, but I can understand why the general population does it. If you have an artist like Namie that isn't familiar to American people (generally), you compare her to somebody that everyone has heard about in terms of fame. It's still a silly thing to do when they don't have anything else in common, except for being singers. |

Utada compared herself to Mariah Carey before so I'm guessing she's fine with being compared.
Namie being compared to Madonna can be taken as a compliment because I'm guessing Madonna was super successful. But most of the media doesn't know what the heck they are talking about and they just want be seem interesting. So they just write whatever. |

They do it because when people don't understand something they need some sort of basis by which to measure it. So like they know britney but don't know Utada (or 'uganda' to the people who have no idea whatsoever), and therefore apply knowledge of britney onto Utada so she becomes more familiar.
Or something like that. The process isn't shocking but its still weird. |

I'm guilty of comparing Japanese artists to Western ones to friends who have no idea who they are, or what the Japanese music market is like at all. It gives them a better idea of their general pop image and popularity - then they get the actual context of their music when I show them clips.
But to someone who hasn't ever taken an interest in music beyond their own country, it can be easier to root their understanding into something they're already familiar with as Delicious n Bold said.

But...they're not comparing Namie to Madonna in terms of status/releases/perception by a certain audience. They're saying that Namie's new album leaked in the same way that Rebel Heart did, months before its release, which is completely incorrect. They're full of shit, lol

)No, the tracklist and covers were released officially by her label, and how the World Music Awards fanpage admin got the idea of an album leak is unknown. |

I was talking in general, this was not the first time where I seen Namie being compared to Madonna. But still they always don't know what they are talking about. |

I don't like Madonna, and I love Namie, what do I do? how do I compare?

There is no comparison...they compared the leaks (which was obviously wrong information) of the both albums...not the artist...they could also have said like the 1-D album if they had such a pre-leak

Just got my Taiwanese copy of Live Style 2014, and I'm so disappointed that the Chinese subs are hard-subbed. I can't remove them with my remote or via the menu.
