It's funny how I'm seeing posts about hoping for a nostalgic feel when I remember people talking about how WORDS was nostalgic when it dropped. Wasn't there some nostalgia feels around Story, Walk and Last minute when they dropped as well? lol

I don't really want another nostalgic feel, I kinda want her to do something totally different but I don't think there's many genres she hasn't tried yet

Actually, I thought I'd look at a bunch of the genres she's covered and she's done so many types of songs...EDM and trance to gospel and country. It's really crazy how varied her sound can be.

Why put that pressure and those expectations on the next album? How many times has that worked out for ya? Fuck cause it has never worked out for me.

Look to the new release with fresh eyes and perspective.

Of course I want something good, but I’m not about to sit here and put into detail what “good” might be, because then it becomes virtually unattainable. I learned that the hard way with R’n’R Circus when I bascislly had built an entire concept in my mind, fashioned together from all the teaser images we received.

Honestly, ayus albums are never what I expect them to be. Maybe this time I’ll expect it to be a hot turd on a platter. Lol.

oh yeah I still remember that bitter taste of disappointment when she released RAINBOW after glorious I am...

it's weird but these days I can say I only care about these original albums:

1. I am...
2. Loveppears
3. MY STORY
4. A Song for XX
5. Duty

I doubt she'll ever release something that could impress me

You know, I am almost to that point too, and with those exact albums. I have gotten pretty into My Story as well.

I'm not eve bitter about it, I just have found that the different styles on those albums are what I enjoy most. I've listened to ASFXX and Loveppears a ton recently. :O

Loveppears has always been one of my favorites, and recently I've been going back to it along with a song for xx and rainbow.

These days I mostly listen ASFXX, especially songs As If…, SIGNAL and Wishing. As if… became one of my favorite songs on the album. I also listen Two of us though this song is not on the album.

IMO this is evidence of how strong and varied her delivery is... There are several artists out there whose delivery makes it easy to point out what releases are good or bad, or what work is their best or their worst.

Ayu tends to be divisive at her worst and pretty much every release has their own share of lovers and haters. I don't think that aside maybe from the S/S covers and that evolution TV live from 2009 anything she ever did is universally considered bad.

I think Love again and Party Queen are almost universally considered bad. Also, certain individual songs like Winter Diary. It feels like the minority actually loves them. And there seems to be a general consensus that her recent releases are worse than her old releaes.

There are some exceptions, of course, but well it's not something unique to ayu: there will always be at least some people who love a "bad" release of any artist, I've never seen any release that was universally considered bad except, like, the Avatar movie (although I'm sure if you search hard enough you'll find some people who actually like even this lol).

^ PQ has a sizable fanbase. To be honest, I myself didn't care for a lot of it when it was new (other than call, letter, reminds me, etc.) - but it has grown on me over the years.

With Ayu, I've noticed a lot of people prefer what was new when they became a fan - which makes sense. For example, you rarely see someone who became a fan early in her career (say, LOVEppears) who stans for something like R'n'R Circus. But people who became fans during R'n'R Circus time thing it's the best thing since sliced bread, and everything before and after is awful. They also tend to think that that is the type of music they want to hear from her. I also think that Ayu has such a wide spread when it comes to age of her fans, and that definitely plays into things too.

Any time she has had a major shift in her sound or style you also have people who either love and are drawn to it, or who absolutely hate it.

lmao this is so true! I became a fan in 2009 so to me albums like NEXT LEVEL and Rock'n'Roll Circus are pure treasures and I don't get the hate for them. I don't think the pre-2009 releases are awful tho Yet I don't consider that Duty/Loveppears/I am... are her best albums, I am more into (miss)understood/Secret/GUILTY whereas someone who became a fan in the early 2000s might think the opposite

Check out the poll about "album you used to hate and now you love", Party Queen is winning there. RAINBOW was also a pretty divisive album during it's release and now it's pretty much loved.

And of course even the worst releases has their admirers for any artist, but more often than not is VERY easy to point out what is considered the best and worst release by a pop musician, and this is not as easy for Ayu.

Ayu has her most and less popular releases, but a sizeble amount of people will love or hate pretty much everything she released to date.

I became a fan a year before GUILTY, which was when I started really paying attention to her releases. And then it remained my favorite.

So, I definitely stand by that theory.

God help me if I ever decide to put Party Queen or LOVE again on repeat though.
